Traumatic
$1.2 trillion deficit
Even before he takes office, President-elect Obama is inheriting a history-shattering nightmare: the worst federal deficit America ever incurred.
Petty
Petty, petty, petty
Traditionally, all newly elected U.S. presidents stay at Blair House, the large official U.S. guest home complex across from the White House, until their inaugurals. But when Barack Obama asked to move his family into Blair early, so his daughters could begin school, he was told that all its rooms were booked. So the Obamas moved into the Hay-Adams Hotel instead.

WVU chance for reform
A couple of years ago, West Virginia University's Board of Governors was too political, too much an assembly of insiders. Future
Democratic trend
Back in 1969, Kevin Phillips wrote The Emerging Republican Majority predicting conservative domination of America's political future. His forecast generally came true for more than three decades. White fundamentalists flocked to the GOP. President Nixon's "Southern Strategy," subtly appealing to racial prejudice, swung Dixie from solid Democratic to solid Republican. Blue-collar white gun-lovers also joined the GOP base, which traditionally included the wealthy and militarists.

Family raises a furor
In the community of Easton, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Heath Campbell have named their boy after the Fuehrer. Little Adolf Hitler Campbell, now 3, was recently shown romping happily on the family's living-room floor.
