Esther Sarah Beattie, 93, of Scott Depot died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Born May 14, 1915, in Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late James Austin and Nancy Raines Livingston. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Beattie; her grandson, Larry Milbee; her brothers, Okey, Leonard and Elza Livingston; and sisters, Mae Belle Smith and Ethel Stone.

She was a homemaker and a member of Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene, Hurricane.

Surviving are her daughters and their husbands, Alveta and Okey Dale Tribble of Scott Depot and Nancy Louella “Lou” and Frank Milbee of Goliad, Texas; her sons and their wives, Paul and Carrie Lou Beattie of Covington, Ga., and Delmer and Beverly Beattie of Scott Depot; her brother, Henry Livingston of Huntington; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Teays Valley Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Charles V. Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Creston Cemetery, Leon.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Chapman Funeral Home, 3947 Teays Valley Road, Hurricane.

Sylvia Bonnett Byrd died August 22, 2008, after a long and active life.

Born in Walton on February 7, 1913, she was the daughter of Holly H. and Della Bonnett.

She was retired from the Department of Highways in Charleston after 27 years of service.

For the past 17 years, she had been a resident of Winter Park, Fla., where she was a member of First Christian Church of Winter Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Byrd; two sisters, Sybil Valentine and Faye Bonnett; and one brother, Nathan Bonnett.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Billie Bonnett of Winston-Salem, N.C.: one niece, Sheila Brooks of Winter Park, Fla.; five nephews, Charlie Droddy of Dunbar, Richard Valentine of Huntington, Jerry Valentine of Milford, Ohio, and Roger and Robert Bonnett, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; numerous great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; and one dear friend, Charles Griffith Jr. of Charleston.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston.

Entombment will be at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Rev. James G. Coleman

 

The Rev. James G. Coleman, 86, of Elkview went to sleep in Jesus on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.

He was a wonderful pastor, husband, father and friend. His one desire was that his ministry for the Lord would not end at his death, but continue to extend the invitation to you to accept Jesus as your savior and join him in that Resurrection Day to live forever with Jesus.

He was the son of the late James and Mary Coleman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie; stepson, Russell Billings; and stepdaughter, Janice Dodd Sullivan. Also preceding him in death were his sisters, Fay Hughart, Dorothy Johnson, Garnett Hughart, Grace Hall and June Good; and brother, Thomas Coleman.

Surviving: son, James J. Coleman and wife, Susan, of Big Chimney; daughters, Joyce Thakkar and husband, Gunvant, of Temecula, Calif., and Dorothy Jeffries and husband, James, of Pinch; stepdaughter, Lola Biuckians and husband, Edward, of Churchville, Pa.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

James graduated from Elkview High School in 1940 where he boxed and played football. He loved following the games of the Herbert Hoover Huskies and was presented a signed game ball by members of the 1995 team.

James proudly served his country for three years in World War II in the Army with Company B 723rd Railway Operating Battalion as private first class. He served in the Rhineland Central Europe Campaign and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Mausbach, Germany, on September 18, 1944. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Award, Combat Infantryman's Badge and Rifle M1 Sharpshooter.

He worked 40 years at the DuPont Belle Plant, for which he was very grateful. His work for the Lord was his first love. James served 12 churches as their pastor. He had the honor of performing 201 baptisms, 124 marriages and officiating 145 funerals and the privilege of 243 conversions during his 67 years in the Lord's ministry. James traveled more than 300,000 miles in the work of his Lord.

The family would like to thank all his friends for their support through the years. A special thanks goes to the staff at Belle's Residential in St. Albans for their loving care during the past five months.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 30, at Blue Creek Advent Christian Church, Route 119, north of Elkview, with the Rev. Mike Todorovich, the Rev. Rick Sams and the Rev. Ted Tawney officiating. Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Blue Creek Advent Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or Blue Creek Advent Christian Church, General Delivery, Blue Creek, WV 25026.

Mrs. Anna Belle Fouts, 79, of Douglasville, Ga., formerly of Poca, passed away August 28, 2008, in Douglasville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis J. Fouts Sr., and daughter, Robin Lynn Fletcher.

She is survived by her children, Edward L. and wife, Lena Fouts, of Georgia and Lewis J. Jr. and wife, Vickie Fouts, of Poca; brother, Bob Hartley of Ohio; sister, Mary Smalley of Hometown; and five grandchildren.

Private services will be held and burial will be in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens and Crematorium, Red House.

Garland J. Groves, 76, of Poca, formerly of Jodie, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at home after a brief illness.

Born Nov. 23, 1931, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Lester and Lena Hughes Groves. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Norene R. Groves.

He was retired from Stevens Excavating Company, St. Albans, and attended Nitro Church of the Nazarene. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Shelba Jean Groves of Poca; daughter and her husband, Pam and Mike Roberts of Poe; sons and their wives, Steve and Grace Groves and Aaron and Tammy Groves, all of Mount Nebo; half sisters, Barbara and Betty Jo; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. James Daily officiating. Burial will be in Rich Creek Cemetery, Jodie.

Elbert Scott Hosey, 63, of Webster Springs died Aug. 27, 2008, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

Born July 10, 1945, in Centralia, he was a son of the late Burl Edwen and Clara Clutter Hosey. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Zela Starcher Hosey, and sisters, Dolly Dilley and Dorothy Baughman.

He was a dozer operator in the mining industry and was a Protestant. He lived most of his life in Webster County and enjoyed hunting, fishing and artistry.

Survivors include a son, Scott Hosey of Bolair; brother, Bazzle Hosey of Bolair; sisters, Bonnie Cogar and Mable Giles, both of Bolair; stepdaughter, Sharon Gregory of Bolair; and grandchildren, Hoyt Hosey, Dalton Hosey, Dennis Gregory and April Bess.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, with the Rev. Curt Davis officiating. Burial will be in Given Cemetery, Upperglade.

Barbara Wriston Nottingham

 

Barbara Wriston Nottingham, 68, of Dixie passed away Aug. 28, 2008, at home after a short illness.

Born Aug. 8, 1940, in Vaughan, she was a daughter of the late Farley and Stella Dickson Wriston. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Claude Nottingham of Dixie; her brothers, James Wriston of Vaughan, Earl Wriston of Ohio and Franklin Wriston of Illinois; and sister, Violet Humphrey of Montgomery.

She was a retired homemaker, after working several years as custodian at Dixie Elementary School. In later years, she also worked at Smith's Diner, Dixie, where she finally retired to spend time with her family. She loved football games, playing cards and Bingo and, most of all, her family, each and every one.

Barbara is survived by her four children, Norma Nottingham Moore and husband, Billy, of Smithers, Jimmy Nottingham and wife, Angie, of Hurricane, Rebecca “Becky” Nottingham Hodge and husband, Duke, of Jodie and Master Sgt. Ricky Nottingham and wife, Melissa, of Dixie. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, Vincent Dumrongkietiman and wife, Natalie, of Dixie, Victor Scott Dumrongkietiman and wife, Alisha, of Teays Valley, Allen Dumrongkietiman and Nicki Estep of Smithers, Jeremy McClain of Smithers, Justin Nottingham and wife, Michelle, of Gilbert, James Nottingham of Hurricane, Brandon Hodge of Jodie, Amanda Hodge Nix and husband, Joey, of Auburn, Ga., Christopher Nottingham of Dixie and Ryan Nottingham of Dixie; and great-grandchildren, Douglas Anthony Nix of Auburn, Ga., Hunter Dumrongkietiman of Crookston, Minn., Claudia Dumrongkietiman of Crookston, Minn., Chloe Dumrongkietiman of Smithers, Byron Nottington of Gilbert, Riley Jean Dumrongkietiman of Teays Valley, and soon-to-arrive Sophie Dumrongkietiman of Dixie.

Also surviving are a brother, Junior Wriston of Tilden, Ill.; sisters, Margaret Buzzard of Seth and Helen Underwood of Sylvester; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at Pennington Funeral Home, Gauley Bridge, with Jason Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Johnston family cemetery on Dutch Ridge. The family will serve as pallbearers.

There will be a short visitation one hour prior to the services.

Magdeline “Maggie” Rinehart, 91, of Hurricane passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at SunBridge for Putnam County after an extended illness.

She was a member of Coal Fork United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Mary Circle.

Maggie was a clerk at O.J. Morrison Department Store for 14 years but, most importantly, was a loving, wife, mother and grandmother.

Maggie was preceded in death by her husband, David B. Rinehart; and one son, Steven David Rinehart.

She is survived by her son, Fred of Charleston; sisters, Eunice Puckett of Nicholas County and Stella Justice; three grandchildren, Kami Rinehart of Georgetown, Ky., Travis Rinehart of Richmond, Va., and Brennan of Hurricane; and best friends, Nona Harlon, Georgi Stone, Eula Palmer and Mabel Wright.

Private graveside services were held in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, with the Rev. Earl Cochran officiating.

Mr. Shamblin was a Christian, an Army veteran of World War II and retired from Westmoreland Coal Company.

A tribute to the life of Mr. Shamblin will be 1 p.m. Saturday, August 30, at Shamblin Cemetery.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, James L. Smith; children, Mark Smith and his wife, Pam, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Nancy Green and her husband, Leroy, of Charleston; brother, Bill Laton and his wife, Betty Lou, of St. Albans; and grandchildren, Sara and Cory Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Christopher and Tyler Green of Charleston.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 30, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Means officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Vada Jean Snyder, 85, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord Thursday, August 28, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde William Snyder; son, Larry Lane Snyder; two sisters; three brothers; and her parents.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry Wayne “Spaceman” Songer and Clyde Ervin “Snooks” Snyder; four grandchildren, Jason Snyder, Misty Dotson, Jeanie Dunlap and Jennifer Snyder; one stepgranddaughter, Tammy Pauley; one special stepgrandson, Dustin Pauley; six great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; and two sisters, Maryland Moore and Phyllis Thomason.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 30, at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with Pastor Basil Hudson officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Jean enjoyed gardening and myrtle picking. She also enjoyed hunting greens with neighbor, Edith Stover. She especially loved cooking for her family and loved family gatherings. Sitting on the porch sharing her love of nature with all those who would gather 'round were her most cherished moments. Jean was a kind, generous person. She always gave food and clothing to those in need. Her house was open to all. She never turned anyone away. She will be forever missed and never forgotten.

Bernice M. Talbert, 86, of Charleston went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Dunbar.

She was a devoted wife and mother, was a retired banker with One Valley Bank and attended the Northside Church of the Nazarene.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Clifford Ramsey and Thomas O. Talbert; her parents, Joseph and Emma Elswick; son, James Ronald Ramsey; stepmother, Addie Elswick; sisters, Lillian Elswick and Hazel England; and brothers, Ted and Arnold Elswick.

Surviving are her sons, Gary L. Ramsey and his wife, Linda, of Elkview and Thomas E. Ramsey and his wife, Deanne, of Charleston; sisters, Virginia Clay and Rebecca Paxton of Elkview; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Keller Funeral Home, Dunbar, with Pastor Jerry Cline and Pastor Terry Hogue officiating. Burial will follow in Elk Hills Memorial Park.

Teddy R. Tolley, 89, of Charleston, formerly of Cabin Creek, died August 26, 2008, in Huntington Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys D. Tolley, on April 21, 2002.

Surviving are his daughter, Alice Sue Turner of Clute, Texas; sons, Teddy R. Tolley of LaPorte, Texas, Thomas David Tolley of Ona, Roger Dale Tolley of League City, Texas, and Terry Dean Tolley of Houston, Texas; sister, Leona McIntosh of Cleveland, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

James S. Toney

 

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, James "Jim" S. Toney, 63, of Marina, Calif., passed away Saturday, August 16, 2008.

Born July 9, 1945, he was the son of Okey Jr. and Agatha "Duke" Toney, grew up in Smithers, and attended Montgomery High School.

Jim served in the Air Force for 22 years, 12 of those years in Japan. He was very interested in Japanese culture and enjoyed collecting Japanese antiques. After his military career, he worked in the Civil Service, retiring in 2006 after 20 years of dedicated service.

Jim enjoyed rooting for the San Francisco Giants, taking photographs and exercising.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kaoru; his two children, James (Claire) and Ken (Philrene); four grandchildren, Alexis, Ashlynn, Nicholas and Alexander; and sister, Karen.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private service will be held.

Ruth Irma White, 68, of Clendenin went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 24, 2008.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. White was the daughter of the late Gilbert Franklin and Ruth Irma Kohlhafer Elliott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard White, and sisters, Karen Beck and Verna Elliott.

She is survived by daughters, Deborah Simmons and Virginia Kennedy, both of Clendenin, and Linda George of Elkview; sisters, Laura Freel and Sharon Elliott, both of Baltimore, Md.; and five grandchildren, Amanda, Vinnie, Zachary, Maggie and Tabitha.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, August 30, at Matics Funeral Home, Clendenin.

The family requests no black attire and suggests donations to the American Diabetes Association, in lieu of flowers.

Charles H. Williams, 92, of Boomer passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008.

He was born March 8, 1916, in Lincoln County and was the son of the late Earl and Nora Hill Williams. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Loretta Fay Riggins; and sisters, Audrey Deck and Verna Forlone.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, with special appreciation for minister Don Perry of Shrewsbury for his kindness and many prayers. He was retired from Union Carbide, Alloy.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Olive Williams; son, Mark Williams and his wife, Ann, of Ravenswood; daughter, Charlotte Coleman and her husband, Ken, of Boomer; special son-in-law, Carlton Riggins; grandchildren, Jason Williams of Ravenswood and Matt Riggins and his wife, Genienne; great-granddaughter, Jacie Riggins; sister, Ruby Gumwell; cousins, Bill and Henry Williams, and their families, and Mary Norman of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Cunningham Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, St. Albans, with the Rev. Grady Scott officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the mausoleum chapel.
