CHARLESTON , W.Va. - Operators of Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center are looking to hire about 100 supervisors, staff and food service workers in the coming weeks.
Rich Tesler, director of operations for the track near Cross Lanes, said the hiring was brought on by the recent addition of table games at the facility.
Last month, Tri-State opened its first poker tables since Kanawha County voters approved the expansion of gambling at the track last year. Track owners hope to add blackjack, roulette and other casino-style games within the next few weeks.
Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 - Operators of Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center are looking to hire about 100 supervisors, staff and food service workers in the coming weeks. The hiring was brought on by the recent addition of table games at the facility.
"With the advent of poker, we've seen a growth in our business," Tesler said. He said the track would hire new workers because of the extra demand caused by the poker tables and to fill old positions that were left vacant.
"Because business is up, we're filling those positions," he said.
Some of the positions that are open include cooks, food servers, cocktail servers, dishwashers and fast-food cooks; dog leaders, cashiers, security guards, surveillance technicians and other technicians; maintenance staff and slot attendants. "There are a fairly good number of supervisory positions," Tesler said.
"Also, we're still looking for 20 experienced floor supervisors and six pit bosses, but I'm not sure we're going to find them here," he said.
Tesler said first preference would go to hiring local people for jobs at the track, and he said many of the jobs are union.
Those interested should apply in person at the racetrack, located off the Cross Lanes exit of Interstate 64.

Why the excitement over 100 jobs. Those of you who voted for this place were told there would be hundreds of high paying, quality jobs.

If you worked out there you would know the real story. The reason they are hiring is because they have ran off all of the old employees. They did credit checks on every employee going back at least 10 years, anyone owing anything on credit cards, past medical bills, house payments, taxes etc., has to go to credit counseling or they are terminated.Everyone owes on something, that is the great American way. They are saying that hard working, honest, people who are late on the bills ,are going to rip them off and they will not license them to work.It is not the smoking that is the issue. It is the tratment of employee who have spent years as dedicated workers and the Union is to spineless to stand up to them so they are looking for employment elswhere.

Indeed it is interesting that the largest facility to go smoke-free is doing just fine. Granted, the addition of table games makes a difference but it does show that non-smoking does not mean the end of business.
Tri-State has not opposed the ban like some of the bars in the Valley. Maybe the bars should examine how Tri-State has worked to make customers' experience more enjoyable. Bars can't offer table games but they could look at how they could attract new customers by cleaning their places up, offering entertainment or doing anything which attracts customers.
All businesses have to change to reflect the needs and desires of the customer at some point. Smart businesses survive and the ones who do not see change as an opportunity to grow go the way of the buggy whip industry and disappear.

Can you imagine the cloud of smoke hanging over the poker area if they still allowed smoking? I doubt the ventilation systme could keep up!
We have SUCH degenerates in this area.... smoking, drinking, and gambling are fine but don't take $2 a week from my meager blue collar paycheck to help pay for better police and paving. HAHAHA... no wonder we are the laughing stock of the country. If I were Obama, I wouldn't give a damn about us either.
