CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Three Belle volunteer firemen were charged with arson this week for allegedly setting fire to the town's fishing pier.
Belle Police Chief D.B. Cox said two adults and two juveniles were arrested and charged with third-degree arson in connection with a fire early Tuesday at the town fishing pier on West Riverview Drive.
According to criminal complaints filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court, police found a gasoline can and the accelerant napalm at the scene of the fire. Under questioning, the suspects admitted setting the fire, Cox said.
Cox said both adults and one of the juveniles arrested are members of the Belle Volunteer Fire Department. Those arrested include William Woodrow Nunn, 18, of Catherine Lane in Belle and J. Edgar Hoover, 19, of West Central Avenue in Belle. Names of the juveniles arrested were not released.
"From the very beginning, [Volunteer Fire] Chief Armstrong and the firefighters have been very cooperative, and in no way condoned this action by some of their junior members," Cox said.
Cox said the pier cost about $3,100 to build in the 1990s, but town officials have been told it will cost $8,900 to replace the structure.
He said some of the support beams on the pier were burned completely through. The pier has been closed to the public.
"We have determined that it's not safe to be on it," Cox said.
