An afternoon thunderstorm that dumped 1.23 inches of rain in the Kanawha Valley in a half-hour left numerous incidents of spot flooding and mudslides in the county Wednesday, authorities said.
Reports of flooding were widespread across Kanawha County, including Doc Bailey Road and Fairland Road in Cross Lanes; Rich Fork Road in Sissonville; Garrison Avenue, South Park Road, Chappell Road, Chesterfield Avenue, and 21st Street West in Charleston; and Roxalana Road in Dunbar, among other locations.
Mudslides were also reported on South Park Road and Chappell Road, according to Metro 911 dispatchers.
The National Weather Service in Charleston issued an urban and small stream flood advisory at 4:53 p.m., meteorologist Jim Dent said.
He said the advisory was issued after reports that the heavy downpour had caused ponding on roadways and minor flooding in poor drainage areas.
"It sounds like it's more nuisance flooding," he said.
