Railroad officials say ATV riders damaging tracks

WELCH, W.Va. -- Officials with Norfolk Southern Co. say a problem with all-terrain vehicle riders cruising along train tracks is getting worse.

Brian Kahle, a special agent for the company's police department, said train tracks in southern West Virginia are being damaged by ATV riders.

That means trains could be at risk, but it's also hazardous for ATV riders.

Kahle says the biggest problems are in Wyoming and McDowell counties.

ATV riders caught on the tracks face up to 25 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Norfolk Southern is sponsoring an educational program starting July 10 in the Bearsville section of Wyoming County to warn about the dangers of riding ATVs on railroad tracks.

I do think that 4-wheelers have gotten out of hand,(I'm a rider myself). There is not enough done to either keep kids off from them or limit their use. As for damage to the railroad tracks, if you believe this, I have ocean front property right in the middle of Missouri.

Doesn't matter where the story comes from, still feel the Gazette gets excited when something bad about atv's happens. I guess you are one of the ones who don't own one and don't want others to have fun either.

Ummm... this story is from the AP, not the gazette. Get off your high horse, ATVs are destroying what beauty this state has left to offer.

Does anyone else get the feeling that anytime there is a story, especially a negative one on atv's, atv riders or atv accidents, the editors at the Gazette get really warm and fuzzy feelings inside?
