Suspect in Megan Williams case pleads to battery

LOGAN -- The final defendants in the Logan County torture case are set for trial later this summer, while another suspect recently pleaded guilty.

Assistant Prosecutor Robert Ilderton said Monday that Linnie Burton Jr. pleaded guilty to battery June 9 as part of a deal approved by the victim, 21-year-old Megan Williams. Burton was given a six-month suspended jail sentence and placed on one year of supervised probation.

Burton could have received up to a year in jail for the misdemeanor, which stemmed from him striking Williams in the head with his fist.

The Charleston woman was held captive for several days last summer at a Big Creek trailer.

Defendants Bobby Brewster and Danny Combs are scheduled for trial in July and August, respectively. Four others pleaded guilty earlier, including one woman charged with a hate crime. Williams is black; her attackers are white.

Although I, like JC, used to think it wasn't racially motivated because of the prior relationship with one of the defendants, after reading the statements and other discovery, I understand that at some point that relationship changed and racial slurs became common place. Whether racially motivated or not, no one should have to endure what this young lady went through. A couple bad checks do not justify this happening to anyone. I honestly can't believe everything that this girl went through.
I am glad to see that the victim's mother is no longer being the center of attention in this.

This article states the victim is black, attackers ar white. From what I understand, the victim dated one of the attackers previously. So it WASN'T racially motivated, as some want to believe. If the girl was unstable, why didn't her mom know where she was? She was in trouble for bad checks in another county. She wasn't sooo innocent. Although she DIDN'T deserve the torture, but it had nothing to do with RACE!
