West Virginia University has named a former health sciences administrator to serve as interim provost in the wake of a master's degree scandal involving Gov. Joe Manchin's daughter.

WVU President Mike Garrison appointed E. Jane Martin, senior adviser to the vice president for health sciences, to the post, the school announced today. Martin was previously dean of WVU's School of Nursing for 15 years, according to a university press release.

Former WVU Provost Gerald Lang and Business school dean Stephen Sears resigned last month over the controversy involving Manchin's daughter, Heather Bresch, and the underserved MBA degree the university granted to her.

The provost's office is responsible for administering academic policies and programs, according to the release.

"I see this as an opportunity to give back to my university at a very challenging time," Martin said today in a prepared statement.

Lang's resignation is effective June 30.
