A high profile professor at West Virginia University P.I. Reed School of Journalism involved in a court case to disclose her sources for stories about the 2001 anthrax attacks will leave WVU at the end of the spring semester.

Toni Locy is currently a visiting professor and Shott Chair of Journalism at WVU. She will leave the university in May to join Washington and Lee University Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, according to Washington and Lee's Web site.

Locy is currently appealing a contempt citation by a federal district judge. She has refused to reveal the names of several sources used in articles she wrote while covering the Justice Department for USA Today in 2001 and 2002. She faces fines of up to $5,000 a day. Her next hearing is scheduled for May 9.

She was recently recognized by the American Society of Newspaper Editors for her refusal to reveal her sources in the ongoing court case.

According to Washington and Lee's Web site, Locy will begin work at the university in Lexington, Va., July 1.

In her new position, Locy will teach courses in reporting on the civil and criminal justice systems, according to the university.

"Her experience, her energy, her love for her profession and especially her courage will serve as a guide and inspiration to our students and her new colleagues," Brian Richardson, department head of the school of journalism at Washington and Lee, said in a written statement.

WVU declined to comment on a personnel matter.

Locy began teaching at WVU in August 2007.

Locy is a 1981 graduate of WVU's school of journalism.  She has worked as a reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News, Boston Globe, Washington Post, U.S. News & World Report, USA Today and The Associated Press.
