State approves funds for new West Side school

The state School Building Authority awarded Kanawha County $8.5 million this morning to build the first of two proposed schools on Charleston's West Side.
The plan for the school, which would be built on the former Cabell School site along Kanawha Boulevard, is contingent upon the voters approving the excess levy May 13, which would provide another $2.5 million.
Chuck Wilson, lead school architect for Kanawha County, said they would also need an additional $2.3 million. That may be found through carryover funds or as part of a bond issue.
The bond could possibly include money for the second school.
