Tandy, staff moving past USF debacle

MORGANTOWN - It was a classic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And for that, Keith Tandy has paid a stiff public price.

Of course, to an extent he has no one to blame but himself. After all, cornerbacks aren't supposed to be in the wrong place at any time, much less the worst times. And last Friday against South Florida, the West Virginia sophomore was in that position twice.

The result was two long catches by USF's Carlton Mitchell, one for a 49-yard touchdown and the other for a 69-yard gain that set up a score in the Bulls' 30-19 win in Tampa. Both times it was Tandy lurking a couple of yards behind, which in pass coverage terms might as well be sitting up in the stands.

You can blame Tandy for the defeat all you want but the offense had some of the worse play calling in the history of football. And special teams continues to be a joke.
IF, we luck out and beat Louisville today, at best we're going to end up 7 and 5. Take that to the bank.
Those predicting Stew and company having a NC contending team in two or three years are fools...or worse.

I implore Jeff Casteel to go to the Juco's and recruit DB's that will actually start next year. This BS of turning offensive players into defensive players has gone on long enough.

Sorry about "socker' instead of "soccer" being used. The bottom line is surely there is someone in Morgantown that has a strong leg. We need help.

"When you rebuild a house a whole lot of deconstruction is required before recontruction is complete. We are in the middle of the 2nd year of transition. Everyone was prepared to give "The Product" a 5 year" I fail to grasp what had to be rebuilt? When Stewie was handed the team, it was a wining team and a power house that just missed playing for the national championship, why the "need" for rebuilding? Now after almost 20 games and two years, the program is being dismantled, not "rebuilt". All of the posting armchair QBs can analyze the defense, the 3-3-5, the 4-3, the 9-2, whatever or what D-back is effective or try a soccer player as kicker, etc. and analyze to ad nasium, which exactly what the posters are doing while overlooking the MOST FUNDAMENTAL problem--you need a COMPETENT head coach and offensive coordinator, which WVU DOES NOT HAVE! Period!

MarshallFan-TeeHee is not knowing a wide reciever has no-one guarding him. I was rooting for them & Aaron Dodson, but that is pretty pitiful.

When you rebuild a house a whole lot of deconstruction is required before recontruction is complete. We are in the middle of the 2nd year of transition. Everyone was prepared to give "The Product" a 5 year
recovery period following the Don Nehlen era. The vast majority are prepared to throw Stew under the bus after 1.5 yrs. I have been hyper critical of many aspects of the teams performance this year, but I have not called for a change in coaching. A change of the system being utilized on defense, yes. A change in the offenses play design and personel groupings, yes. But a not a change in the offensive cood., HC, or DC. I question every day why we can't recruit defensive linemen. The big D-lineman we were hard after from Pahokee, FL committed to Wake Forrest yesterday. Players in the high school see aspects of a team performing poorly & automatically eliminate that team from consideration. 4 years and if we don't win the championship, fire the lot.

Oldmanmotown- Great call on getting a "soccer" player to put it away so we don't have to close our eyes-that is,unless the soccer team is in season now. I'm still having problems with punting from our 33. Dimensia I guess. Why don't we switch some o-linemen over to D to at least get some bulk. And how do you play a 3-man line on the goal-line or on 3rd/4th &1? Finally, would people stop talking about the "System" Pass coverage is mano-mano.

Great recruiting (two years in a row) Stew.
    Nice record!
Thanks for the successes, including bowl wins, so far and good luck in the future.

Never underestimate the ability of someone to completely go off topic and start another "we hate stew" thread.

I agree that the players in the D-back positions were not recruited for that purpose and it shows. That is why I will hold out judgment on Stew/coaches until they have all their recruits in the system and playing.

Getting a good kicker is a must. I mean the defense has looked bad at times but when the team is starting at mid-field or more, it makes it hard. The kick coverage seems to be getting better but when the opponent gets the ball at the 15-20 yard line, it isn't hard to get to the 40.

The crux of WVU football problems are not the players or the silly blame it on the defense because the offense sucks too; the crux is the head coach and offensive coordinator both of which suck! Those that wish WVU will get better, please continue to wish. The realists among us will continue to face the truth--Stewie was "handed" the job in the middle of the night by an alcohol and euphoria influenced president and AD, without benefit of interviewing any other very capable candidates. Coach Peterson at Boise State, please call 1-800-WVU Needs A Real Coach.

The reason why most of the d-backs were recruited as offensive players is because Rich Fraud focused on offensive players. They are his recruits. And I agree with wvu80. Surely there is somenone on that team that can kick into the end zone. If not, grab a socker player to do it.

How long does it take to train an athlete to play a position? Hogan is still not good, and Tandy, how long and how many games has he played in...maybe in a few years he will be decent? Wes Lyons...they never have used him to his potential, because they can't throw to him or he can't get free on the routes? Give the coaches time and they might teach these guys to tackle, and run routes, and call the right plays... With the talent WV has got, it's painful to watch them play and lose.

Does it really matter why he (or the other side) can't cover? That has be decided and fixed Monday thru Friday. If he can't handle the duties find someone who can. I'm sure he is a nice kid and all but if he can't run can that really be taught? Maybe too much focus on stopping the run...a corner is suppossed to cover first. If so are the D line and linebackers weak? Could be more problems. On another subject can we not find one kid in the whole US that can put the kickoff into or thru the end zone?

Why do we convert a bunch of offensive players to be D-Secondary players? Is recruiting that bad for D backs?

This one is supposed to be a 'Breather",and we can't expect Stewart to change anything, but it would be nice to see how the new guys can do&Not only on D. Does anybody else wonder why it is Lockwood and not Casteel answering for the D problems?

Lockwood is a good coach but it goes to show you that pre-season perception and thinking means absolutely nothing. Before the season started the defense was built up as it should have been, we had a good D-line, had great linebackers, but there were questions raised about our yound D-backs. Now we are seeing why. Will they be good down the road, maybe, but they are still young.

What happened to the offense though? I mean the first 4 games of the season they moved the ball at will, couldn't tell what they were going to do next. Now I feel like I am back in Nelhen times, can almost predict what they run every down. Lord knows I am no coach but if I can do that from my couch then the people getting paid 1mill+ should be able to see that and more.

The players/coaches/team had a bad game. It happens. Its good we have UL this week so that we can build some confidence and try to get back into a groove.

truthperme, if you think that Lockwood isn't a good coach then ask Ellis Lankster, who is now in the NFL after one year with the guy. He wasn't even on the radar until Lockwood showed up.
And how good do you think a secondary with three former quarterbacks is going to be anyway? It's way to early to tell how good these coaches are because they still don't have their recruits on the field. Most of your other points were just plain jibberish so I won't even bother.
It's amazing how most of the really good coaches in this world are sitting at home on their computers, typing complaints instead of out their on the field every Saturday.

If this is the worst they do, so be it. However, I am afraid that this may just be a harbinger of things to come. For the love of all that is right and just, any D-I defensive back KNOWS that you play the ball first, not the man. So, that brings into question Lockwood's coaching ability, and ultimately Stewart's ability to dismiss Lockwood if he cannot coach the secondary correctly. (Here we go with that race thing again)I thought the D was supposed to be the strong area of the team and the O-line suspect - well, it seems the opposite to me. The only other thing that is on my mind is the lack of offensive surprise. Yes, everyone knows that N.D. will carry the ball, but do we have to always have him as the primary option? Why not WILDCAT? My goodness, we're holding back on Tavon Austin??? Brown, in a non-QB role? Saunders running like he's being chased by the cops? Hell, loosen it up, or if not, ask D. Nehlen to call the plays (ha!)They need to aggresively win out their games.
