Kanawha schools cutting arts field trips
Fuel costs to blame; no-idling policy planned for buses

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha County public school students can forget about going to "The Nutcracker" ballet during the school day this year.

They can forget about going to Children's Theatre of Charleston performances during the school day, too.

Faced with sharply higher diesel fuel prices, Superintendent Ron Duerring is cutting down drastically on field trips, said Jane Roberts, assistant superintendent for elementary education.

Capital provides free transportation to at least one football game every year for the students. Limited amount of seating and on a first-come-first-serve basis, but still free. I wonder if they would be willing to do the same for their award-winning performance programs?

I am shocked that Dr. Duerring and the Kanawha County Board have made this decision. It reads as if they are implying that arts related field trips are not academic or educational. Most of the arts organizations take months to prepare educational materials to go along with their performances that connect specifically to other curricular areas. The Clay Center hires teachers to develop curriculum guides for each performance event presented for students. It is offensive to hear that only the "core" subjects can take field trips.

According to No Child Left Behind, the arts ARE core curriculum. This current mindset is what is killing arts programs in WV and indeed across the country. Yet, the most popular programs on TV and in our area are arts related. The 21st Century curriculum relies heavily on arts education...even emphasizes its importance. What is going on????

Art is what makes us happy. Sports make a very few people very wealthy...at least enough to put criminal lawyers on retainer.

I personally want my child to feel comfortable with a classic in hand, an opera in his ears and a hum on his lips. I guess I want refinement, not brutishness.

And, I do not believe more money makes teachers better. Either they love to teach or they ride the tide to retirement.

Additionally, it's really, really obvious the administration is top-heavy, some schools are given financial preference and decision-making on the part of the BOE is reactive not proactive. ("The sky is falling, the sky is falling. Let's do something, now, now, now!")

So, we might as well forget quality culture and build more jails.

bobbi, in some instances parents can still carpool kids, if it's a small group. Often what happens is parents carpool a group of performers to a school for a program. But you can't carpool an entire orchestra, or theater troupe with costumes and set, to a school. (not to mention the bureaucracy you have to fight through to get the trip approved) In the end, that doesn't give anywhere the effect of having an entire grade of a school going to a high school to see that performance in an auditorium or theater, with full set or full ensemble.

There are many events staged by professional performing groups (such as the WV Ballet or JADCO or Theater WV) that have special daytime performances for students in professional surroundings (Clay Center, Cultural Center). The effect of those field trips on young people can't be measured in gallons of gasoline, and for many, that will be their only real exposure to the arts outside of TV or a movie theater.

Ok,that's the second time for the comments against attendance directors so here's the FYI - The 13 attendance directors are the School Social Workers after they were retitled. Because of so many parents who chose that attending school regularly is not important the focus of the SW job is now attendance. They have appx.2-3 thousand students (about 7-8 schools each person) to be responsible for absences every day. They have to go looking for kids, making home visits, and become what's also known as a Truant officer. Not to mention helping in most crisis-death, fire, etc. to replace a family's needs -clothes, shoes, food, etc. They are a tremendous asset and are some of the hardest working people in the system. Some of the titles listed by the board sound fancy but they stand for regular positions of very important, essential, and hard-working people that the system couldn't operate without. I am upset with the arts/sports issue too but we have to be careful of effets of the solutions.

This is so sad. It doesn't surprise me though in Kanawha County. I just moved here and the archaic system that runs the state education system sickens me. It is impossible to get a teaching job in the county. Teachers who have been here for years and are just waiting for retirement get to stay and new teachers with National Boards and Master's Degrees and tons experience from other states can't get into the system because of "seniority" state law! Parent's need to stand up and take back education. Parent's need to demand Fine Arts education and realize that No Child Left Behind only helps the Tier 3 children, and does not offer enrichment! We spend so much time and money on the children who aren't making benchmarks that we forget to enrich our children with field trips and the arts! No wonder WV is one of the lowest scoring states in the nation with regards to education!

So, the school system wants to pay for drug testing.
BUT they want to cart kids to their school's football games where they'll sit around bored, where drug using is more prevalent ("Wanna go behind the bleachers?").

They want to hire more administrators than they need (13 attendance directors and 17 assistants? Please.)
BUT there are never enough teachers for our schools.

They want to give teachers incentives for coming to work (I thought that was called a paycheck and ethics?).
BUT there's not enough money to let our children see the symphony.

Oh, we definitely have our priorities in line.

When I was a student and when I first began teaching, parents carpooled to take children to activities occurring within the school day. Such a plan could work again if we did not live in such a litigious society. It is sad, however, that the top administrators in Kanawha County have decided that in order to stop the financial blood flow they cut out the heart of culture.Have they considered how much fuel could be saved in a lengthened scool day on 4 days a week? Regarding sports trips: if you think that the counties are providing that transportations cost-free, think again!

Venezuela has an orchestra program where children of all ages participate in local youth orchestras a few afternoons every week. The program has turned out many talented young artists, and a lot of the children go on to pursue careers in their instrument of choice.

The program was originally instated to keep children off the streets, out of gangs and drugs. And you know what? Its working.

My point, art programs can do more than teach a child how to draw a pretty picture.

The legislature should do something about the "top heavy" central offices in many counties in West Virginia. Those people are tripping over each other in the small spaces that once were occupied by a small number of administrators/secretaries. This is a problem in many counties that is affecting supplies, technology, and now transportation.

Cutting buses should begin with the after hours extra activities not the potentially educational school related activities. Some of the curriculum is designed to go along with performances and demonstrations that these students were going to see. In addition, as the article states, some schools' art programs are funded by these field trips. Fewer "feeder school" kids are exposed to the programs, so fewer become involved. The program shrinks, and the downward spiral continues. Perhaps the BOE should look more into EXPANDING the arts programs, because they could definitely pay for themselves if we wanted. Remember the Phantom of the Opera performances by CHS in May? The school MADE money, and plenty of it! Think of how wonderful it would be if those kind of events were more regular occurences in this county. Its wonderful for the children to attend, healthy to participate in, and a great thing for the community.

By attending these programs at a young age these children will be more accepting and likely to learn / participate with the arts as they become older. Squash the seed when they're young and it may never be planted at some other time. Students can be driven by personal vehicles to games, competitions, etc. - The arts can not be replaced.

This is rediculous. ALL surveys show that students who are active in arts (esp. music) perform on a HIGHER academic level than those who don't. In high school I participated in Orchestra, WVYSO, and Theatre. Guess what? Those programs taught me discipine, patience, responsibility, teamwork and team-building, adaptability, problem-solving, partnership, and gave me the ability to look at something from a variety of angles (interpretation). And that's just a couple of the performance programs. Visual arts, crafts, heck even shop class teaches a person to open their mind and experiment, try new things and learn about themselves. Why are these FUNDAMENTAL traits being sacrificed? I advise everyone to go visit a high school performance group, be it theatre, band, dance, choir, or orchestra. Then go visit a typical high school cafeteria. See how the character of the children involved with arts is so much more developed.

They always cut out field trips to something connected to creativity but can't cut out anything that has to do with sports. There are children who will never be proficient in academics, no mantter how much time they spend in the classroom or how long they sit at a computer but they might be artistically gifted. Since, tragically, Kanawha County Schools only wants to foster athleticism, let the parents of the athletes bear transportation costs for getting their children to sway games. Don't punish children who may NEVER get to attend a performance of the symphony or the ballet or see real art in a museum. Since the schools love research-based learning techniques, they should know that the arts can provide children with many benefits that can't be fostered in the classroom. But teamwork and leadership that sports provide CAN be taught in the classroom. Cutting out field trips for art events to save a few dollars on fuel will just set Kanawha County students farther behind.

So what's new? Kanawha County has always provided fewer field trips than other counties in the state. One often sees out of county busses on the interstates. Kanawha County just needs to save more money than the other counties so they can keep the central office fully staffed with assistant superintendents and assistant assistant superintendents. Of course none of this is at the expense of athletics. Let the high schools continue to play Princeton but not play each other.

In many elementary schools Science and Social Studies class time has been significantly reduced or largely cut out to focus more solely on Math and Reading. So what little bit of classroom exposure is being lost as well. Soon foreign students will know much more about this countries history and culture than our children. Not to mention the effects of students having nearly any science exposure until middle school and high school. Think I'm kidding ask your children a few questions and pay attention to how much they talk about these subjects this coming year. We're really in trouble academically and culturally in this county. When I attended Kanawha County Schools several decades ago,we had the pledge to the flag, art and music (when it could be fit in), recess, and the field trip to see the local orchestra,(not too many field trips either). The way I see it, the fuel cost is the school system's latest way to cut something from a student's learning experience. It seems as though something that is good for students is always being eliminated. I can't remember being given extra time from regular classes to study for achievement tests-the tests were just given. Yes, I received a rounded education from Kanawha County Schools, but it was the art, music, recess and physical education classes, and yes field trips, that complimented the math, science, english and history courses. School board please leave creativity in the schools, because sitting at a computer all the time is not a complete learning experience.

Yeah, arts is always the first to go because the morons in charge of education in this state seem to think it's expendable. I'll tell you what's expendable: SPORTS!!!! I'm so sick of the myth propegated that being involved in sports teaches "teamwork", "fair play", "sportmanship", "competetive values". What a crock! When parents get into fights over their children at games, when players get into fights on the field and on the court, and all the coach cares about is winning at all cost...then I'd say it's time to hit THAT budget instead of the Arts budget. Let our children have some creative outlets, for crying out loud, expose them to classical music and the master artists of this world. Diefy the artists, whose works lasts for centuries...instead of the quarterback who ends up in jail. Yeah, that's a great value for our kids to be learning.

As a Kanawha Co teacher I am so glad to read the responses listed here. We become very frustrated with the decisions made as well because we too like these experiences for the children. Some of our students, particularly in certain areas of the county, never get to participate without the school's help so this is very unfortunate. Since the sports is extra and by the student's choice then they should have to provide their own transportation in troubled times as these. They could car pool to events and games where no one will drive many students to the arts events unless the school takes them. Arts events benefit everyone not just the ones who play. We do really need to check our priorities! Good luck getting BOE to listen!

My husband and I were sickened by the decision to eliminate arts field trips. How unfortunate that some bureaucrats believe that an educated mind is one that can spell, read and calculate. That is a trained mind. An educated mind is one which can look at a problem from many perspectives. It is capable of proposing multiple solutions, and it has an appreciation for challenging and beautiful ideas. All disciplines have elements of these qualities, but the arts are defined by them. Employers sometimes use a knowledge of the arts as a barometer to measure the complexity and quality of prospective employees' thought processes. While it is possible to be financially successful without the arts, individuals who are truly respected in their fields can converse as easily about visual art or the performing arts as they can about technology and business. We can't imagine why some West Virginia educators insist on keeping our children on the fringes of the larger culture.

This is just one example of why I have refused to vote for any excess levy in the past several years. The head of the school system does NOT know what is an academic subject is what is not. Art and music are most definitely an important part of of childs education. Do you see any "sports" programs being cut?? How many students upon completion of their public school educaation earn a living from "sports"?
Until our school system puts priority emphasis on ACADEMICS and NOT on SPORTS, I will continue to NOT VOTE for any excess levy and will encourage others to do the same. There are a multitude of items that can be reduced or completely cut out of the current schools budget that do not relate to or impact the ACADEMIC subjects. Dr Duering and the other overpaid "education professionals" on Elizabeth Street need to all see if WVU can provide them with degrees in COMMON SENSE.

Creativity needs to be a priority in all of our lives...as we try to cope with the challenges that we,as a society, face today.

Cutting the field trips is not a good or a creative idea.
Please try to come up with a better way to cut costs.

If this is truly due to higher diesel fuel costs, why doesn't the board of ed look into other ways to help save fuel costs? Here in Huntington, I can't tell you how many times I have behind a school bus that stops at every street corner. Why? The constant starting and stopping wastes a lot of extra fuel. How about making designated bus stops for the communities? If a child ends up walking 5 or 6 blocks to get to the bus stop where is the harm? There isn't any because it is good for the kids to get out and walk anyway.

The arts ARE an academic subject and attending a performance is every bit as much a learning activity as shooting off rockets at STARBASE. Furthermore, when else will most of our students see a ballet, a symphony orchestra, or a play. Without school trips, the majority of our non-wealthy students will be denied acess to these activities. This is a VERY sad state of affairs.

Duerring needs to rethink this issue: it's selling the school children short. I thought that education was supposed to be child-centered.

It sounds like to me that Jane Roberts has gone power crazy. She was all into arts, etc. when she was in charge of Whole Language in Kanawha Co.Schools. As a former elementary teacher, I can tell you that not all learning takes place in the classroom. Children need to be exposed to the arts for it empowers the imagination. What is learning without imagination? Hello: This is the real world. In the job force, you can't make it without an education that also gives a person imagination for out of that comes creativity.

I think it is really sad that they would cut out the arts programs. My children enjoy them. We pitched in extra money for our kids to go, this was not a free trip. I think they should cut back the sports schedule. You'll never see that happen. The clay center gets old quick for kids that have been there before. If they want it more science based maybe the should actually focus on this in the classroom.
