Corrections to investigate alleged strip search

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- State Division of Corrections investigators will look into allegations that a prison work crew from a McDowell County correctional facility were stripped and searched last week along the side of the road in view of the public.

Corrections Commissioner Jim Rubenstein said he was aware of the incident, but that officials with the McDowell County-owned prison said the men were only stripped to their boxer shorts and were not in the view of passing motorists or houses.

"We'll have at least one of our folks down there to determine if everything was handled properly," the commissioner said Friday.

Yes I feel that the Guards were correct in what they did. It is a hard job, and they must protect the community along with thimselves, the people in jail did a crime but do they have to be treated as dirt. We are clueless of how they are talked to and treated in jail. They are people also. I know that they are n jail from crimes but some of the crimes are not violent crimes. Even a prisoners they should have some rights. To medical attention/treatment.Not to be cursed at.Not to be called out of their names. We pay these peoples to do a job. What happened to rehabilitation? Is that word a joke? We can't believe that all people in jail are trash. If we beleive that they can't be rehabilitated then we don't beleive in God! We all belong to Him. And there is hope for all, there is hope. Let's not judge. Until you have a family member locked up, then you don't know. Would you want your child treated like dirt for commiting a crime that only hurt themselves and not others?

LOVE IT! YOU LOSE UR CIVIL RIGHTS WHEN YOU LAND YOURSELF IN JAIL. THE GUARDS DID THEIR JOB. THE PRISONERS SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT TWICE BEFORE COMMITTING THE CRIME. GOOD JOB GUARDS, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

What about the rights of the people your husband violated when he committed his crime? Yeah prisoners are humans but so are their victims. Get over it.

hey thats right blame the parents!!!!!! Its time we put the blame where it go's.The person that did the crime not on the parents..Once you are an adult you are responsible for your own actions..Those officers have to protect the public and them selves. You should lose your rights when you are incarcerated. If thats the worst that happens to these prisoners while they are incarcerated they should consider themselves lucky.

    Continued:

If one of those inmates or a CO would have been shor or killed, then everyone would really be crying then. The INMATES safety as well as staff are first, and if they got embarrassed, so be it. They are in prison. Worse things could have happened!!!! You should be glas, all of you that the CO's were thinking of safety first.

In my opinion, the correctional officers were well within thier rights to do what they did. When you are convicted of a crime, you give up certian 'rights' and privacy is one of them. A correctioanl officer has the right to strip search ANY inmate if they feel thier safety or the safety of others could be compromised. I worked for the WVDOC, and I know from experience, it is better to be safe than sorry. Out in the open was a little much, they could have taken them one at a time beside the van, but what they did was justified. It is my understanding that the CO's are no longer to carry a weapon with them on the road crew, so what if that inmate or inmates had a weapon instead of cigarettes? These Inmates are no longer 'boys'. They are grown men who committed crimes against society, and as such, they give up rights, just as the victims of their crimes gave up rights. I respect the correctional officers who did this, and think they showed great judgement.

no civil rights were violated---do you even know what that means or is it just a term you have heard as a phrase people use to file lawsuits? Is any of the "houses" that were nearby or "4 wheeler riders" complaining? or just the inmates mommy get real--safty is 1st for the guards and the inmates. Seems you can't win if it had been a gun passed to them and they waited to search them and someone died then you would cry they should have searched them there.

Just think if the parents of these men or boys had done a better job raising them...Maybe they wouldn't even have been there and maybe prisons wouoldn't be over crowded and on and on ...they get fed , medicine,a place to sleep and in some cases an education. They take from society but yet society gives to them and keeps giving... Sick world. Make parents responsible for their children until they are 21 and if a 15 16 18 etc gets pregnant make her either marry the father of the baby ...or at lest name him ..welfare just puts unknown on the form and start mailing the benifits...that is one sick bussiness in this country....MOM DAD wake up.

To all the people that are saying for these men to get over it, you really need to stop and think about what they would do in this situation. You wouldnt be too happy about it either. Those men had their civil rights violated and something should be done about it. And just because you are in jail doesnt mean you dont have rights. The lady in ohio did exactly what any other mother would do. she cares about her son and wants the best for him. whether he is in jail or not.

The Prosecuting Attorney did not tell this reporter that a pack of cigarettes was found during the search. He said it might have been cigarettes, but not to quote him on that. He told the reporter to call the facility and talk to the Investigating Officer. He gave him Mr. Cochran's name as who to speak too. People should not talk to reporters for this very reason.

If the prisoners were stripped searched, I hope that the correctional officers had the good sense to still treat them like human beings. Everyone makes mistakes and I am not saying that they should not have been searched, but come on - all this over a pack of cigarettes. How much will this investigation cost the state of WV? The dept. of Corrections, has the lowest paying jobs in the state. Once you are in the system, you are not treated like a person, you are just a number to them and the sad part is that even if these guys were exposed to the others, nothing will be done to put their dignity back in place after the fact. I truly hope that the ego tripping guards are dealth with accordingly.

So what;little Johnny was made to drop his pants so that the guards could be sure that EVERYONE on the bus was safe.If the lady from Columbus had been called to say that her son had been injured on the bus by a fellow inmate she would be whining that they hadn't protected her GOOD little boy.I guess I just took it for granted that law enforcement could condust searches anytime they needed too.Get over it lady, stop the whining and appreciate the fact they wanted to keep your son safe along with everyone else.

What's the difference between being seen in a pair of swim trunks and being seen in your underwear? This is much ado about nothing. Wonder what was most embarrassing, being strip-searched or being found guilty of a crime and heading off to the big house. Get real, these guys weren't tortured. I wouldn't waste my time with an investigation. An investigation of what?

The inmate's mother from Columbus really believes him because she says "he wouldn't have me call [the newspaper]" otherwise. I wonder how many times little Johnny has ran to mommy and she jumped to his defense instead of holding him accountable. Probably why he's where he's at and not a productive citizen. If somebody had gotten injured because a weapon had been passed to the inmates, everyone would be wondering why they weren't strip searched before they got on the bus. Correctional employees walk a tight line between public safety and public scrutiny.

If anybody is at fault. It's the prisoner who had something thrown to him. If that hadn't have happened the search wouldn't have been needed.
The guards were doing right thing. Prisoners blowing it up into more than it is. As Morgan said. They shouldn't have broke the law to get put in there.

if you don't commit a crime, then being stripped to your shorts by the road wouldn't happen...get over it...prisoner's rights don't supersede the guards safety...
