CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia's lone Republican in Congress wants to know how national health care legislation would affect the state's budget.

U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito has asked the state Department of Health and Human Resources for an estimate of how much the health care legislation passed Saturday in the U.S. House will cost the state.

Capito is concerned about the state's Medicaid budget. The federal legislation would increase the number of people eligible for health insurance through the Medicaid program.

Increasing the eligible Medicaid population, Capito says, could be a significant burden on West Virginia's finances.

The federal government pays for most of West Virginia's Medicaid, but the program cost the state about $545 million in the last fiscal year.
