CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Agriculture says red meat production jumped 26 percent in West Virginia last month.

The agency said Friday that West Virginia's cattle, hog and sheep farmers produced 1 million pounds of meat in September. A year earlier, West Virginia farmers produced 740,000 pounds of red meat.

USDA figures show commercial red meat production was down slightly for the country as a whole to 4.26 billion pounds in September, compared with 4.26 million pounds in September 2008.
