Playoff roundup: Bluefield (AA), Madonna (A) advance to title games
Advertiser

Marcus Patterson shrugged off two would-be tacklers at the point of attack and cut back across the field on the way to a 57-yard, third-quarter punt return for a touchdown as No. 6 Bluefield shocked No. 2 Magnolia 13-10 Friday night in the Class AA playoff semifinals.

The Beavers (10-2) put the game on ice on the first play of the final quarter when tailback Jake Lilly went 30 yards for a touchdown, carrying a defender the final 10 yards.

Magnolia, last year's Class AA runner-up to Grafton, outgained Bluefield by a 142-7 yardage count in the first half but went to the locker room in a scoreless tie thanks to a couple of miscues.

The first was a botched snap on a field-goal attempt, and the other occurred when Lilly took the ball away from Blue Eagles running back Dillon Jackson as Magnolia was driving.

Magnolia (12-1) took a 3-0 lead in the third quarter on a 19-yard Justin Fox field goal, and scored with about two minutes left in the game on a 9-yard pass from Fox to Jared Blatt. Bluefield recovered the ensuing onside kick.

The Beavers will face either No. 1 Wayne (12-0) or No. 4 Frankfort (11-1) for the title at 7:30 next Friday night in the Super Six at Wheeling Island Stadium.

  • MADONNA 18, CENTRAL 7: Quarterback Max Nogay carried 30 times for 135 yards and scored on a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs as No. 1 Madonna shut down perennial power Wheeling Central in Weirton.
  • The Blue Dons, last year's state runner-up, face either No. 2 Man (11-1) or No. 3 Richwood (12-0) next Saturday night in the Super Six at Wheeling Island Stadium.

Madonna (13-0), which entered the game having given up just 30 points on the season, limited the Maroon Knights to 210 yards of offense. Nogay also did it through the air, connecting with Connor Arlia on 15-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

The lone touchdown for Wheeling Central (9-4) came on a 45-yard pass from Zack Hood to Jordan Sorge in the fourth quarter.
