SETH - Time finally ran out on Sherman's season.
Brad Fox gained 111 yards on 16 carries as sixth-seeded Bluefield's ball-control offense took a 25-18 victory Friday night over the No. 3 Tide in the Class AA quarterfinals. A crowd of about 2,000 attended at Zontini Field.
The Beavers (10-2) will take on today's Magnolia-Keyser winner in next week's semifinals on a date and time to be determined Sunday. Sherman (11-1) finished with the most wins in school history.
Senior quarterback Colby Treadway hit senior wideout Jacob Rollo on a 41-yard touchdown strike with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter to pull Sherman within 25-18. Bluefield blocked the extra-point kick.
Bluefield senior Marcus Patterson blanketed Rollo, but Rollo trapped the ball against Patterson's back and pulled it to his chest and held on as the pair tumbled to the ground for the score. That was Rollo's only catch of the game after hauling in five passes for 161 yards and three scores in the Tide's 48-41 come-from-behind win over Chapmanville in last week's opening round.
Sherman decided to kick the ball deep with 3:12 left and two timeouts. Bluefield junior quarterback Levi Beckett picked up a first down after a 4-yard gain on third-and-3 that essentially sealed the win.
"We're proud to come out of here with a victory,'' said veteran Bluefield coach Fred Simon. "[Sherman] knew what it would take to beat us. I was very impressed with them.
"They seemed to have a decent answer for us every time. What I liked watching on film, the last three games of the season they were behind but they never quit. They showed a lot of heart.''
Beckett scored on a 34-yard run up the middle with 5:04 to go in the final period to give Bluefield a 25-12 advantage.

Bluefield senior running back Jake Lilly turned in 87 yards on 18 attempts and scored two TDs. Beckett also completed 5-of-9 passes for 56 yards and added 38 yards rushing. The Beavers gained 263 yards on 54 carries and were only forced to punt once.
"We've been decent all year with our rush game,'' Simon said. "We didn't break too many big plays. Whatever we got we had to earn.''
"They're good at what they do,'' said Sherman coach Shann Elkins. "They don't do a whole lot, but they're very good. We knew we had to play our best effort to win. There were times I thought we made a couple mistakes, but [our players] just kept fighting and fighting.''
Treadway scored on a 10-yard run to give Sherman a 6-0 lead on the first possession of the game. The Tide squibbed a short kick and recovered at the Bluefield 37 after Lilly was hit when he touched the ball. Sherman, however, went three-and-out and had to punt.
Treadway passed for 106 yards and two scores and added 136 yards on 14 carries with a TD. He surpassed 1,000 yards rushing (1,128) and had nearly 2,000 passing (1,990) on the season.
"Our kids, everybody's doubted them all year,'' said Elkins. "The character they showed, we saw it every week how they worked in practice and during the offseason. I thought they played their hearts out.
"They've pushed themselves and everybody around them. They even pushed the coaching staff because they wanted to go undefeated and do some of those things and that's what got us to where we're at. That's what happens when you get great senior leadership. It's been unbelievable.''
