Former Charleston Catholic standout Bo King isn't quite sure which way he's headed.
Former Charleston Catholic standout Bo King isn't quite sure which way he's headed.
King, who led the Irish to back-to-back Class A state titles in 2006 and '07, was dismissed from the squad at Division I Presbyterian earlier this month after playing in four games. Blue Hose coach Gregg Nibert said at the time King's attitude was "detrimental to the team.''
The 6-foot freshman guard returned to the Kanawha Valley before Christmas to map out his future strategy, according to his mother, Pat King.
"He's going to go to [West Virginia] State and take a couple classes,'' Pat King said, "and then go from there. I couldn't tell if he was ready to go away again. He's lost a lot of people lately who were near to him, like his grandfather.
"He's been going through a lot. I've asked him to be a student right now until we can figure out what he wants to do with his life. Right now, he's just been going through so much.''
Dawson set to return
South Charleston coach Bob Dawson, who suffered a heart attack on Nov. 18, is expected to join his squad at a game for the first time on Jan. 2 at Nitro.
Dawson has been attending team practices for quite a while, but doctors suggested he not coach at an actual game until after Christmas. He was readmitted to the hospital Dec. 10 because of chest pains.
"I think he's ready,'' said Cliff Jackson, one of SC's assistants who has been handling the head coaching duties in Dawson's absence.
"We all know he's stubborn, but he's made the changes and has been listening pretty much to what his doctor says. He's down to 182 pounds. His blood pressure [lately] has been pretty stable. The big change for two, three weeks was in his medicines. He hasn't had heart damage since the heart attack on Nov. 18. Everything has been positive.''
First steps for Estep
Duane Estep, Riverside's first-year coach, has endured a few "frustrating'' weeks on the job with the 1-3 Warriors.
Not only has he had to work with his players to install some of his offensive and defensive schemes, but he's had to cure them of past bad habits.
"I've watched films of [Riverside's] previous seasons,'' Estep said, "and that's not my style of ball. If you're going to run up and down the floor and just jack up shots, you don't need a coach for that. You just need a team manager. So I'm trying to change all that.
"It's hard to do when you play teams like [Woodrow Wilson] and South Charleston back-to-back. It's just been tough. But the guys are playing hard. I can't fault them. They're playing as hard as they can play. Kids like that make it worth your while.''

Riverside's coach has a hard situation to come into and be successful. Good luck...
