Allan Wasonga picked up 239 yards of total offense and rushed for two touchdowns, but it was his defensive play that saved the day as Point Pleasant (7-3) downed Chapmanville 17-7 at Point Pleasant in high school football Friday night.
With the Black Knights leading 10-7 late in the game, Chapmanville was threatening to score the go-ahead touchdown, but Wasonga picked off Todd Terry's pass at the Point Pleasant one-yard line to deny the Tigers, who are ranked No. 4 in Class AA.
The victory gives Point Pleasant, which entered the game ranked No. 10 in Class AA, the Cardinal Conference championship.
Wasonga carried 31 times for 203 yards and had the Black Knights' lone pass reception for 36 yards. The Cardinal Conference scoring leader added an insurance touchdown on a seven-yard run with three seconds remaining in the game.
The Black Knights defense held the Tigers to under 150 yards of offense.
Chapmanville's David Wiley ran for 70 yards on eight carries, and Joey Stevens contributed 49 yards on 12 carries. Terry completed seven passes to five different receivers for 61 yards with two interceptions.
The loss was the second in a row for Chapmanville (8-2).
