Prep roundup: Valley's Thompson blanks Sherman 7-0

Josh Thompson fired a one-hit shutout as host Valley blanked Sherman 7-0 in high school baseball Saturday.

Thompson, who also doubled, struck out 12 in the complete-game effort. Tyler Sears went 3-for-4 with a double home run and five RBIs for the Greyhounds (5-1) while Austin Belmont smacked a two-run round-tripper.

Mark Massey singled for the Tide (0-2).

  • RIVERSIDE 3, SHADY SPRING 0: Ryan Robinson and Zach Downey combined on a two-hit shutout as the visiting Class AAA Warriors downed the Class AA Tigers (2-3). Jake Harmon went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and RBI for Riverside (3-2).
  • SCOTT, FAYETTEVILLE SPLIT: Cameron Akers tossed a three-hit shutout as Scott defeated host Fayetteville 11-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule win in the nightcap to salvage a doubleheader split. The Skyhawks gave up six unearned runs behind three errors in dropping the opener to the Pirates 8-6. Akers went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and three runs in the second game for Scott (2-4). Nick Carte and Drew Hess had two hits apiece, including a double each, in the first game for Fayetteville (4-4).

  • STAR MOUNT 4, MIDLAND 2: Cabell Midland committed three errors in the home loss to Star Mount (N.C.).
  • Chelsea Varner went 3-for-3 for Star Mount (2-6). Meredith Baisden homered for the Knights while Jennifer Bodden doubled in a run.

  • MIDLAND 6, CHAPMANVILLE 4: Meredith Baisden went 3-for-4 with a round-tripper and two RBIs to power Class AAA No. 3 Cabell Midland past the visiting Tigers.
  • Jennifer Bodden doubled and drove in three runs for Midland (9-1). Haley Hendricks had three RBIs for Class AA No. 1 Chapmanville, the defending state champions, while Bre Thomas knocked in a run.

  • POINT PLEASANT 5, WAHAMA 4: Emily Jones scored the winning run with none out in the bottom of the seventh as the host Black Knight edge the White Falcons. Jones led off the seventh with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Charmee Smith and took third on Jennifer Wickline's single. Jones then beat the throw home on Alissa Darst's infield grounder. Tessa Wyant went 2-for-3 for Point. Kylie Riggs banged out a pair of hits for Wahama.
