Herd rips Lamar 87-74
Advertiser

HUNTINGTON - The Global Sports Invitational served to give Marshall and Ohio three quick home games - all victories, as it turns out.

For Lamar, the event turned into a loss-filled tour of America.

The Cardinals played their fourth road game in four states Wednesday night, and Marshall wasn't exactly a gracious host. The Thundering Herd dunked, swatted and stole its way to an easy 87-74 victory before 4,478 at Cam Henderson Center.

Tyler Wilkerson scored 18 points to lead four double-figure scorers as the Herd (3-1) shot an even 50 percent, partly because of nine dunks. Lamar (2-4) might have shot close to that, if not for the Herd's 13 rejections. The Cardinals had a tough time in the first half, shooting 28.1 percent.

"They're certainly a lot bigger, a lot stronger, a lot more athletic than they looked on tape," said Lamar coach Steve Roccaforte. "They blocked bad shots in the first half, and that gave us too big a hole to climb out of."

Wilkerson set the tone early, recording four of his seven blocks before the game's first media timeout. Hassan Whiteside had his fun, as expected, swatting four to give him 14 in his first four collegiate games. Whiteside had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

"Everybody came out with a lot of energy," Wilkerson said. "We wanted to start quickly, because they can really shoot. We came out with a lot of energy, and [Lamar] put it in front of my face."

The Herd, coming off a 70-62 loss at Old Dominion, passed the ball around the horn efficiently, racking up 18 assists out of 32 baskets. Damier Pitts led the way with seven helpers, while Darryl Merthie had three of the Herd's eight steals, seven of which came in the first half.

The Cardinals were coming off a 71-46 loss at Ohio, which followed a 77-54 setback at Texas Tech and a 74-66 loss to Middle Tennessee State.

Marshall never trailed, and was last tied at 2. Whiteside's second of six dunks made it 20-9 and his fourth made it 38-18. The Herd settled for a 41-25 lead at the break, stretched it out to 61-40 at around the 12:00 mark. The rest of the game was often uninspiring and foul-plagued, though Lamar cut the margin to 75-63 on two straight Reggie Mathis 3-pointers.

Pitts answered with a three-point play, and Lamar never threatened. Mathis and Justin Nabors led the Cardinals with 16 points apiece.

Marshall and Ohio finish the Global Sports Invitational at the Charleston Civic Center, playing a 7:30 p.m. game Saturday.

BRIEFLY: DeAndre Kane's eligibility saga continues, but he has won one victory: He has been guaranteed a year's scholarship as a partial qualifier. He remains eligible to practice, and now the NCAA must determine if he can play. At the very least, he will remain at Marshall ... The game matched the alma maters of Keith Veney, whose 409 career 3-point goals ranked eighth in Division I history entering the season. Veney sank 161 at Lamar from 1992-94, before he transferred to Marshall and sank 268 from 1995-97. ... MU's Dago Pena (headaches) was held out, and watched the game in street clothes. Camden Miller did not play with a foot infection, and is questionable for Saturday ...

In a truly meaningless stat, Lamar outrebounded the Herd 46-39 and had 24 offensive boards. A hint: a few of those came after MU rejections. ...  The MU ticket office is having a "Black Friday" promotion, with general admission tickets to all remaining games (except for Memphis) going for $5.
