Roundup: Fox, Carter lead State 2-Man Scramble

Huntington's Steve Fox and Pat Carter set the pace in the West Virginia Two-Man Scramble Championship Friday, shooting an 11-under-par 61 at Stonewall Resort.

Behind Fox and Carter in a three-way tie for second at 8 under are Jim Grimmett and Tad Tomlin, Mike Keiffer and Robert Jones, and Phillip Reale II and Jeremy Rogers.

The final round begins at 9 a.m. today.

  • HERD SOCCER: Marshall's men soccer team opened its new Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex in Huntington Friday by beating the Marshall alumni team 2-0.

    Jahvon Allison and freshman Felipe Thompson scored goals for the Herd. Former Marshall coach Jack Defazio (1982-88) was also on hand to reminisce about his seven-year tenure in Huntington.

    The Herd will open the season on the road at Appalachian State Friday, which will start a four-game road trip to kick off the season.

  • The Marshall women's soccer team blanked Campbell (Ky.) 3-0 to earn its first win Friday in the new Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex in Huntington.
  • The Herd (1-0) struck quickly with a goal in the fourth minute on a cross shot from Erin Simmons. Freshmen Beth Dine and Kayla Byrnside each scored their first collegiate goals and Lizzie Kish had three saves for Marshall.

  • WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Villanova Friday in its final exhibition game in St. Davids, Pa. The Mountaineers outshot the Wildcats 24-3. Junior goalkeeper Lee Johnston posted his second shutout of the preseason for WVU, making two saves.

  • The No. 19-ranked West Virginia women's soccer team opened its campaign with a 2-2 draw at No. 2 Penn State Friday in the Penn State Invitational, in front of 3,742 fans at Jeffrey Field in College Station, Pa.
  • Frances Silva and Kelsie Maloney tallied a goal apiece for the Mountaineers (0-0-1). Taylor Schram and Maya Hayes netted goals for the Nittany Lions (0-0-1).

    The Mountaineers return to Jeffrey Field Sunday and face former Big East foe Syracuse at 2:30 p.m. The Orange (1-0) defeated Hofstra 3-2 in the Invitational opener Friday.

  • Five members of the West Virginia gymnastics program were named Scholastic All-Americans for the 2012-13 academic year, as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women. Earning the distinction were Hope Sloanhoffer (exercise physiology), Bethany Yurko (human nutrition and foods), Marina Galante (sports exercise and psychology), Jaida Lawrence (exercise physiology) and Gina Costa (pre-sport management).
