Prep roundup: Hurricane wins softball regional, heads to states

Courtney Rogers tossed a six-hit shutout and Linzie Reynolds and Emily Davis provided the offensive support as Hurricane knocked off St. Albans 2-0 Friday in the Class AAA Region 4 softball final to advance to its first state tournament in school history. The game was delayed twice by rain for total of three hours.

The Redskins (30-6), who finished third in the final state sportswriters' poll, will face Wheeling Park (20-5) at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson Park in Vienna in the double-elimination state tourney. The Patriots upset No. 1 and defending state champion John Marshall 5-3 in Thursday's Region 1 final.

Reynolds knocked in a run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning then Davis added a solo home run in the sixth for Hurricane, which had beaten SA 9-0 and 13-0 during the regular season. Rogers scattered six hits and never had a runner advance to second base while striking out four with no walks for the Redskins. Maddie Hebb went 2 for 3 for Hurricane.

Ali Haynes surrendered one earned run on five hits with four walks and no strikeouts for No. 8 SA (28-5) while Katie Holstein pounded out two hits.

Baseball

  • VALLEY 6, WYOMING EAST 5: Todd Coleman drove home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as Valley defeated Wyoming East in a regular-season matchup Saturday.
  • Wyoming East's Zack Whitten went 2 for 3 with a home run while Valley's Raeshawn Breckenridge went 3 for 4 with a homer.

    Valley (21-7) will play Man (6-19-1) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Valley in a regional semifinal game.

    Friday's game

  • SCOTT WINS SECTIONAL: Cody Blevins' two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh sent host Scott past Chapmanville 9-8 Friday in the championship game of the AA Region 4 Section 3 tournament.
  • The Skyhawks (18-15) will host Wayne on Tuesday in the Region 4 semifinals.

    Earlier Friday, Chapmanville took a 9-5 win over Scott to avoid elimination behind Brent Bigley's three RBIs.

    The Tigers (22-9) knotted the second game at 8-all in the top of the seventh with two outs on Scottie Thompson's RBI double.

    Forrest Spurlock went 3 for 4 with a homer and RBI for Scott while Cody Brown had two hits and four RBIs. Brock Dalton had two doubles and three RBIs for the Tigers and William Copley went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and two RBIs.
