Prep roundup: GW, Hurricane, SA pick up shutout wins

Tanner Sorrells and John Thomas combined to scatter five hits as George Washington posted an 8-0 high school baseball win over Newfane (N.Y.) Friday at the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Sorrells also helped himself at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double for the Patriots (7-3) while Clayton Anderson contributed two hits including a double. Brian Ratajczak went 2 for 4 for Newfane.

  • HURRICANE 7, MCCLANCY 0: Ryan Metz scattered three hits while striking out nine in pitching the Redskins past McClancy (N.Y.) at Myrtle Beach.
  • Alexander Dunham and J.T. Rogoszewski each went 2 for 3 and Tyson Edwards laced a double for Hurricane (9-2). Matt Fox finished 2 for 3 for McClancy.

  • SA 7, SARANAC 0: Austin Harless allowed just two hits and struck out nine as the Red Dragons scored a win at Myrtle Beach.
  • Phoenix Shrewsbury, Dustin Turley and Josh Burks each collected two hits for St. Albans (6-3), while Joey Dodrill drove in a pair of runs. Ken Erickson went 2 for 3 for Saranac.

  • WINFIELD 10, RIPLEY 7: Brandon Wright went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a home run to lead Winfield (5-6) to the win at Ripley.
  • Jordan Clark had three hits and Bear Bellomy hit a home run for the Generals. Christopher Jordan went 2 for 5 for Ripley.

  • SC 6, LIBERTY 3: Antonio Brown went 2 for 4 with a double as South Charleston downed Liberty in the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach. Dylan Gain had a single, a double and an RBI for Liberty.
  • BISHOP GRIMES 3, LOGAN 1: Seven errors contributed to Logan's downfall in a loss to Bishop Grimes of New York in the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach. The Wildcats fell to 3-4.
  • WAHAMA 21, S. GALLIA 11: Wyatt Suspan went 2 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs and Tyler Grimm added four RBIs to help lead visiting Wahama (3-2) past South Gallia (Ohio). Also for the White Falcons, Wesley Harrison went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
  • GILMER 11, CLAY 8: Austin Cunningham went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs as host Gilmer County picked up a win.
  • Carl Bennington and Austin Ratliff each had two hits for the Titans. Alex Burkhamer went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs for Clay County (5-4) while Chris Cole posted a pair of doubles.

  • CLAY 18, RITCHIE 6: Jimmy Brogan went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs as Clay County picked up a win over Ritchie County in a game played at Gilmer County.
  • Dalton Holcomb had a pair of hits and RBIs for the Panthers (6-4) while Ethan Smith contributed two hits and four RBIs. Seth Cottrill went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Rebels (7-3).

    Softball

  • WINFIELD, CAPITAL SPLIT: The host Cougars pulled out a 4-3 win in eight innings in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Winfield, avoiding the sweep after the Generals scored a 9-1 decision in the opener.
  • Haley King, who earned the victory in relief, went 2 for 4 with a double and triple for the Cougars in the second game. Ally Funk, Katie Legg and Taylor Raines each had two hits for Winfield.

    In the first game, Raines went 2 for 3 with a double and Abby Short had two hits, including a triple, to pace the Generals.

  • JEFFERSON 4, RIVERSIDE 1: Amanda Witt limited the Warriors to four hits over six innings as Jefferson picked up the win at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Witt also enjoyed a fine day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles.
  • Sara Winter allowed four hits and struck out 11 for Riverside (9-8).

  • SCOTT 11, WASHINGTON 2: Sara Browning went 2 for 4 and drove in a run as the Skyhawks knocked off Washington at Myrtle Beach.
  • Jennifer Miller picked up the win, striking out seven, and Katie Marcum picked up a pair of hits for Scott (7-4). Marissa Bales and Devin Williams each drove in a run for Washington.

  • RIPLEY 9, GRAFTON 1: Ashley Mellinger went 2 for 2 and drove home a run as Ripley downed Grafton.
  • Kelsey Moore and Dusti Fisher added two hits apiece for the Vikings (9-2). Lauren Adamczyk drove home the lone run for the Bearcats.

  • BUFFALO 7, SISSONVILLE 6: Olivia Dunn laid down a perfect squeeze bunt as Buffalo scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat visiting Sissonville.
  • Dunn and Chelsey Parkins had two hits each for the Bison (7-1) while Katie Higginbotham went 3 for 4. Kaitlyn Linville and Bekah Baldwin had three hits apiece for the Indians (6-3).
