WVC football: UC upends No. 24 UNC Pembroke 42-30
Jordan Roberts ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns as the University of Charleston beat No. 24 UNC Pembroke 42-30 Saturday in Pembroke, N.C.
UC (6-1, 3-1 West Virginia Conference) jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter and never trailed in the win against the nationally ranked Braves (5-2).
Roberts opened the scoring with a 22-yard touchdown run and then returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score later in the quarter. Ahmed Shakoor picked up a blocked punt and ran 38 yards for a UC touchdown as time expired in the first quarter.
Roberts scored his second rushing touchdown of the game from 2 yards out and even threw a touchdown pass late in the third quarter to George Washington graduate Shaq Williams.
UC quarterback Maurice Leak finished the game with 150 passing yards. Williams caught seven passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. Roberts totaled 296 all-purpose yards.
Glenville (3-4, 3-1) opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Rahmann Lee caught a 34-yard pass from Justin Feagin for a touchdown. Lee added a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to give the Pioneers a 12-0 lead.
State (2-5, 1-3) answered 46 seconds into the third quarter when quarterback Ricky Phillips hooked up with Ervin Kent for a 73-yard touchdown to make it 12-6. Glenville wasted little time responding, scoring less than three minutes later and pushing its lead to 19-6 before Colston Bayless hit a 32-yard field goal and Quin Thompson ran for an 84-yard touchdown to conclude the scoring for the Pioneers.
Feagin led Glenville with 159 passing yards and one touchdown. Phillips completed 15 passes for State with Kent leading the Yellow Jackets with five receptions for 112 yards. Aubra Taylor was WVSU's leading rusher with 103 yards on 30 carries.
West Liberty (4-3, 3-2) was led by quarterback Dylan Lagarde's 242 passing yards on 18 completions. Tristen Devers caught five passes for 90 yards and Kenjay Trueblood ran for a touchdown in the Hilltopper win.
For Shepherd (5-2, 4-1), quarterback Bobby Cooper connected on 19 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown.
Wesleyan (2-5, 1-3) led 14-9 early in the second quarter before the Falcons (2-4, 2-2) found their bearings. FSU quarterback Bobby Vega threw for 256 yards and five touchdowns with Matt Wilmer catching seven passes for 163 yards and three scores. Running back Daniel Monroe ran for a game-high 147 yards and one touchdown for Fairmont.
The Griffins (0-7, 0-4) led throughout most of the game. Quarterback Andrew Jackson completed 22 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns in the loss.
For Concord (4-3, 2-3), Dusold threw for two touchdowns and 225 yards while Calvinaugh Jones ran for a 123 yards with one touchdown.
