Roundup: Catholic boys roll to win in Bishop's Cup

Charleston Catholic opened this year's Bishop's Cup with a win, beating Notre Dame 7-0 at the YMCA Kennedy Center in Huntington.

Joey Trupo scored twice For Catholic, with other goals coming from Sam Revecomb, William Scriptunas, Adam Fox, Noah Cable and Mitch Thorsteinson.

Thursday's game

  • WOODROW 3, ST. ALBANS 1: Ryan Thompson scored two goals to lead Woodrow Wilson past St. Albans 3-1 at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex in Beckley. Luke Rodriguez added a goal and one assist for the Flying Eagles. Davis Atwood scored for the Red Dragons (1-7-1).

  • WVU WRESTLING: Four West Virginia University wrestlers are ranked in the WIN Magazine 2012-13 Preseason Tournament Power Index.

    Senior Shane Young is ranked No. 14 at 125 pounds coming off a 24-8 record last season and a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships. Junior Nathan Pennesi is ranked No. 18 at 133 pounds following a team-high 29 wins and an NCAA Championships appearance.

    Junior Michael Morales comes in at No. 14 at 141 pounds with fellow junior Lance Bryson ranked No. 14 at 174 pounds.

    Pennesi will compete at 141 pounds and Bryson will be at 184 pounds this season.

    WVU finished with a 9-4 record in dual meets last season and had six wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships, the team's most since 2006.

  • MARSHALL BASEBALL: Marshall University will host open walk-on tryouts at 7 p.m. on Sept. 22.

    All interested Marshall students must complete a health history form prior to noon on Thursday, Sept. 20. The form, which can be picked up in the baseball office from assistant coach Tim Donnelly in the Cam Henderson Center, should be returned to Tom Hammett in the athletic training room in the Henderson Center.

    Students must be currently enrolled as full-time students to participate and meet the NCAA's certification requirements and have a complete physical prior to trying out.
