Roundup: Brooks is Wendy's Tour Player of Year
Mullens' Derek Brooks took second place in Tuesday's Wendy's Amateur Tour event at The Resort at Glad Springs to clinch the tour's Player of the Year honor.
Brooks shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish one stroke behind Clarksburg's Michael Stewart on Tuesday. Elizabeth's Sammi Moore won the women's Player of the Year award.
St. Albans' Matthrew Spry and Tornado's Ed Schoettker won this year's Frosty Cup, the tour's four-ball competition.
WVU SPORTS: Following a scoreless tie at Penn State and a 4-2 win at home against Oakland last week, the West Virginia men's soccer team moved up to No. 21 in Soccer America's Top 25. The Mountaineers held the No. 22 spot last week.
MU SPORTS: For the first time since 1983, the Marshall men's golf team finished in the top two in the Marshall Invitational, tying for second place as the 43rd annual event wrapped up Tuesday at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington.
The Thundering Herd shot 289 for a 54-hole score of 853 (1 over par). Marshall finished tied with Ohio State, the two-time defending champion of the invitational. Virginia Tech won the title with a 16-under-par 836.
Marshall was led by senior Nathan Kerns, who shot a 2-under-par 69 Tuesday to finish in second place. The Ironton native was one stroke short of tying and forcing a playoff with the eventual champion, Korey Ward of Xavier (9-under 205).
TECH SOCCER: Sierrah Soto scored twice as the WVU Tech women's team defeated Ohio Valley 2-1 Tuesday.
