Wayne airs it out vs. Hoover

WAYNE - Wayne's vaunted rushing attack gave way to a pretty efficient passing game in the early portion of Friday night's meeting with Cardinal Conference rival Herbert Hoover.

By the time the Pioneers went back to their bread and butter, the only thing still to be decided was the final margin of victory.

Sophomore quarterback Grant Ferguson threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the defending Class AA state champion Pioneers (2-0) rolled to a 46-7 win over the Huskies (0-3) at Pioneer Field.

"You've got to have a quality snap, protection, route runners who catch and a guy who can pull the trigger. The trigger guy showed poise and confidence tonight," said Wayne coach Tom Harmon. "The supporting cast followed his lead."

Wayne scored touchdowns on each of its first five possessions, with none taking more than five plays to complete.

Ferguson teamed with fellow sophomore Mason Hodge for scoring tosses of 4 and 25 yards to give the Pioneers a 12-0 first-quarter lead.

Ferguson then scored on a 77-yard run - his first carry of the night - before firing a 10-yard scoring toss to Austin Pyles to extend the lead to 26-0 with 6:22 left in the first half.

Ferguson finished the half 9 of 11 through the air for 101 yards, while rushing for 73 yards on just three carries.

Senior tailback Brandon Spurlock also got in on the act, completing the first-half scoring with a 34-yard run with 3:06 remaining before the break.

Spurlock finished with 167 yards on just seven carries, gaining 33 yards or more on four of seven totes.

Spurlock's younger brother, Nathan, scored on a 6-yard run just 61 seconds into the second half to make it 40-0, and backup signal-caller Mike Perry capped the Pioneers' night offensively with a 59-yard touchdown pass to Kurt Arthur with 8:39 left in the game.

The Huskies avoided a shutout when Shaun Dotson scored on a 9-yard run with 5:34 remaining. Dotson rushed for 76 yards on 15 carries to lead Hoover.
