WVC football: Shippensburg upsets No. 19 Shepherd 38-28

Shippensburg quarterback Zach Zulli threw for 392 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the Red Raiders to a 38-28 win against Shepherd on Saturday. For the Rams (0-1), quarterback Bobby Cooper was 20-of-35 passing for 295 yards and two touchdowns while Kenny Williams ran for 64 yards and two scores.

Shippensburg (1-0) held Shepherd, which was ranked No. 19 in the preseason American Football Coaches Association Division II poll, to under 300 yards of total offense and capitalized on three Rams fumbles to help secure the win.

  • MILLERSVILLE 42, W.VA. WESLEYAN 17: Nate Montana was 27-of-49 with two touchdown passes, but it was not enough to lift Wesleyan to a win at Millersville (Pa.). The Bobcats (0-1) trailed 21-17 in the third quarter before Millersville (1-0) scored three late touchdowns to pull away. Malcom Yowk led Wesleyan on the ground with 48 yards on 12 carries.
  • CATAWBA 24, WEST LIBERTY 3: West Liberty committed eight turnovers in its season-opening loss to visiting Catawba (NC).
  • The Hilltoppers (0-1) lost four fumbles and the quarterbacks combined to throw four interceptions as the offense sputtered. Catawba held West Liberty to negative rushing yards (minus-33 on 36 carries).

For the Hilltoppers, starting quarterback L.D. Crow was knocked out of the game with an early injury. Dylan Legarde, Bo Whitney and Chris Kiedaisch split time under center the rest of the game, combining to go 8 of 25 for 168 yards in Crow's absence.

  • CONCORD 24, LENOIR-RHYNE 21: Andy Ellington's fourth-quarter field goal gave Concord a lead and the defense did the rest as the Mountain Lions held on. Concord (1-0) limited Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) to 36 yards passing while Mountain Lions' quarterback Zack Grossi went 24 of 41 with a score and ran for another TD.
