Gazette, readers score with Big 12 consortium
BACK ON July 2, West Virginia University President Jim Clements was in the midst of his school's celebration as a new Big 12 member.
He beamed while talking of the benefits to making the move.
"Not just athletically, but academically," Clements said.
Little did we know, the move would also benefit Gazette readers.
As the state's leading newspaper and sports section, we've been invited to participate in a prestigious Big 12 consortium of our own. And Gazette readers will reap the rewards.
The quick skinny? If you follow the WVU Mountaineers and are reading this online, subscribe to the print edition of the Gazette. Pronto. Today. Now. Pick up your cell, call 304-348-4800 and tell the kindly soul that answers you'd like to start a subscription.
If have a subscription, if you're getting newsprint on your fingers as you read this, well, it's your lucky day.
Here's the deal. In an effort to bring readers the very best Big 12 coverage, some of the best newspapers in the country, specifically those in the Big 12 "footprint," have banded together to share coverage of the teams in their front yards.
The content flowing here from the other newspapers won't be posted to our website, but it will bolster our already strong WVU and Big 12 coverage daily in print.
Here's the knockout punch.
The list of papers we've banded with are these: Austin American-Statesman, Daily Oklahoman, Dallas Morning News, Des Moines [Iowa] Register, Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News, Kansas City Star, Lubbock [Texas] Avalanche-Journal, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Tulsa World, Waco Tribune-Herald and Wichita Eagle.
In other words, the best of the best to cover Big 12 teams Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State and TCU.
If you're out west, you might see Dave Hickman's fine WVU coverage in one of those newspapers. We'll be shipping stories and columns from here there. And we'll be importing stories from there here. Coverage will appear in print the same day wherever it's used.
Print readers of the Gazette, Saturday Gazette-Mail and Sunday Gazette-Mail will be the winners.
So if you're reading a pass-around paper or checking this out online, do yourself a favor. Pick up the phone. Call the above number. Start taking the Gazette - and with it the state's very best Big 12 coverage.
