Roundup: Shepherd's Minnich named D2 baseball player of year

Shepherd first baseman Nathan Minnich was been named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Player of the Year Tuesday.

Minnich hit .487 on the year with 21 home runs, 69 RBIs and scored 72 runs. He also led NCAA Division II in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, runs batted in and walks per game, while ranking second in batting average, home runs, home runs per game and walks.

  • LOCAL GOLF: Barry Evans and Tyler Franklin of Berry Hills Country Club finished tied for sixth in the Club Car Head Pro-Assistant Pro Championship Tuesday in Sewickley, Pa. Evans and Franklin shot a combined 67.

    Evans was also entered with Josh Bower, and they tied for 15th, shooting a combined 69.

  • Oak Hill's Winston Canada won the Wendy's Amateur Tour event at Brier Patch Golf Links in Beckley, shooting 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday. Chad Baldwin of Green Bank finished second at even par. Elizabeth's Sammi Moore was the lone female in the 50-person field, shooting an 88.
  • Winning the net division was Ona's Tyler Bullington, who shot a net score of 67, while Cyclone's Jeff Toler also finished with the same net score, losing the first-place position to Bullington in a card-off. Canada and his partner, Smithers' Ara Hopkins, won the four-ball portion of the event with a score of 66. (Results, Page 2B.)

  • Scott Depot's Chris Williams shot a 3-under-par 69 for the low round of the day at the Top Flite Junior Tour season opener at the Cobb Course at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels.
  • Colin Bowles of Oceana won the 12-and-under group, while Bridgeport's Marco Oliverio took the 13-14 group and Cole Hand of Wheeling won the 15-16 group. Whitney Milhoan of Vienna shot the girls low round of the day with an 80. (Results, Page 2B).

  • POWER MOVES: West Virginia Power left-handed pitcher Porfirio Lopez was promoted to Bradenton Tuesday. Right-handed pitcher Nathan Kilcrease was recalled from extended spring training to replace Lopez on the roster.
