Roundup: Marshall blows lead, loses to UCF in C-USA women's tournament

The Marshall women's basketball team held a six-point lead with 2:43 remaining but went 0-for-5 from the free-throw line down the stretch as the Thundering Herd fell 59-57 to Central Florida in the first round of the Conference USA tournament in Tulsa, Okla.

No. 9-seeded Marshall (14-15) was led by Mystee Dale's 21 points off the bench, including 10-of-13 from the foul stripe. Tynikki Crook poured in 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Herd. No. 8 UCF (10-15) was led by Chelsie Wiley's 19 points.

  • UC BASEBALL: The University of Charleston lost both ends of a doubleheader against Wheeling Jesuit Monday in Winter Haven, Fla.

    In the first game, WJ's Andrew Kazusko singled home the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth as the Cardinals took a 4-3 win. Seth Fluharty went 3-of-4 with two RBIs for Wheeling Jesuit and Igor Molina and James Clarke had an RBI each for UC(0-2).

    In the second game, Alex Kuzusko and Shane Sullivan combined to pitch a shutout in WJ's 3-0 win. Steven Buffo and Jordan Kraus each picked up an RBI for the Cardinals (3-1).

  • WVU SPORTS: Brian Johnson, who spent the last five seasons with Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake, was named an assistant coach for WVU's men's soccer team. Johnson helped lead Salt Lake to the MLS championship last season and coached at Ohio State from 2003-2004. He played professionally from 1997-2002.

  • Senior track athlete Keri Bland was named WVU athlete of the week Monday. Bland, a Fairview native, finished in first place in the mile run at the Columbia Last Chance Meet Friday in New York and aided the WVU distance medley relay team to a second-place finish at the ECAC championships Sunday in Boston.
  • The West Virginia cross country team was named an All-Academic team by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The team ranked ninth in the country with a 3.76 grade-point average and held the highest GPA of any team that finished in the top 25 at the national championships.
