Whiteside making big impression

HUNTINGTON - As Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center floor tonight to battle High Point - and, because of the weather, there's a question if the game will be played at all - word about Herd 7-footer Hassan Whiteside continues to spread quickly.

The freshman from Gastonia, N.C., was featured in the Dec. 28 edition of ESPN The Magazine, in Matt Giles' College Basketball column. Giles discusses a trend of big men heading to "mid-major" programs, quoting Thundering Herd assistant coach Darren Tillis.

Whiteside's emergence sets up two interesting Conference USA games when the Herd faces Tulsa and 7-footer Jerome Jordan, the league's preseason player of the year.

On NCAA.com, Anthony Olivia III highlighted Whiteside's nine-block performance against Ohio, calling it a "Top Defensive Performance." Whiteside also had 17 rebounds in 29 minutes, helping hold the Bobcats to 25.9 percent shooting in a 60-53 win at the Charleston Civic Center.

At 7 tonight, the Herd takes on High Point - assuming the Panthers can successfully negotiate the snow-and-traffic clogged West Virginia Turnpike and make it to Huntington. The tipoff time was switched from its original 2 p.m. A final decision on if the game will be played is expected to be announced sometime this morning.

Marshall and High Point have met once, with the Herd taking a 74-73 win on Dec. 21, 2004.

The Panthers are 4-4 and haven't played since a 76-63 loss at South Carolina State on Dec. 9. They preceded that with a split of Big South Conference games, a 63-61 win at Presbyterian and a 81-68 setback at Winthrop.

Six-foot-3 sophomore Nick Barbour leads High Point in scoring at 20.8 points per game, including a career-high of 38 against North Carolina-Pembroke.

Eugene Harris adds 12.4 points to the three-guard lineup.

Scott Cherry is the first-year coach, taking over after the Panthers' 9-21 season in 2008-09. He recently was the top assistant to Darrin Horn at Western Kentucky and South Carolina.
