Football roundup: Poca closes on high note with win over Tolsia
Advertiser

Jason Cuffee threw for 174 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score Friday night as Poca salvaged some satisfaction from a disappointing season with a 36-6 victory at Tolsia.

The Dots (3-7) managed to win despite losing leading rusher Caleb Arthur just before halftime with a leg injury. Arthur ran for 66 yards and one TD on a dozen carries before leaving the game.

Cuffee completed 9-of-18 passes, hitting Tyler Moore with a 79-yard strike for the Dots' first score. Cuffee also ran 35 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter.

Tolsia (4-6) scored in the fourth period on Jacob Copley's 4-yard run. It was the only score allowed by Poca's defense, a sore spot most of the season in giving up 30 or more points six times.

Jimbo Smith had 50 yards on 15 carries and 52 yards on four catches for the Rebels.

Tray Davis filled in for Arthur in the second half, rushing for 86 yards on 16 carries and scoring on a 1-yard run. Jake Skeens had a 3-yard TD run for Poca and Moore caught five passes for 150 yards.

  • SPRING VALLEY 34, WINFIELD 13: Four different players ran for touchdowns as Class AAA No. 4 Spring Valley ended the regular season with a home victory over Winfield.
  • It was Spring Valley's first nine-win season in school history.

Anthony Evans started the scoring with a 3-yard TD run in the first quarter. Dane Niday found the end zone twice on the ground, and Zach Wellman and Eric Slayton added scoring runs.

The Timberwolves (9-1) racked up 271 rushing yards, led by Niday's 63 yards on nine carries.

Two empty trips deep into Spring Valley territory proved costly for Winfield (3-7). The Generals had a first-and-goal at the 1 in the first half and were stopped, and Josh Clark fumbled on the Spring Valley 21 in the third quarter to halt another potential scoring drive.

The Timberwolves promptly responded with a nine-play, 79-yard drive ending in Niday's first touchdown, sealing the win.

  • WAHAMA 58, BUFFALO 22: A steady dose of Micaiah Branch and seven Buffalo turnovers allowed Class A No. 9 Wahama to run away with a home victory.
  • Branch rumbled for 280 yards on 17 attempts with four touchdowns. The White Falcons (8-2) accumulated 475 yards on the ground, including 159 yards on 16 carries and a score from Ryan Lee.

Levi Jordan threw for 219 yards on 13-of-29 passing for the Bison (3-7) but threw five picks, including a second-half interception by Branch, who ran it back 30 yards for a score. Buffalo also lost two fumbles in the game.

Matt Moore carried the load for Buffalo, gaining 67 yards and a touchdown on six rushes and adding 128 yards on six catches.

  • VALLEY 42, WILLIAMSON 14: Quarterback Jack Simms managed the Valley offense effectively, driving the Greyhounds attack for 34 unanswered points in the first half.
