Tom Sutherland, a longtime Kanawha Valley basketball coach, was listed in critical condition in the CAMC Memorial open heart recovery unit Tuesday after an apparent heart attack.

Sutherland, 73, a Winfield resident, previously served as head coach for the men's team at WVU Tech, as well as the boys coach at Nitro, Poca, Valley and Duval. He has nearly 40 years of coaching experience.

In 1999, Sutherland took Valley to the Class A championship game before losing in double overtime to Parkersburg Catholic.
