Soccer roundup: Charleston Catholic girls win sectional title

Amanda Johns booted two goals and Charleston Catholic won the shots on goal battle 36-0 as in a 4-0 win over St. Joseph 4-0 in the Class AA-A Region 4 Section 2 finals Friday at Schoenbaum Stadium.

Victoria Thomas and Emily Blake added goals for Charleston Catholic.

  • HURRICANE 2, HUNTINGTON 1: Skye Smith and Becca Logan scored a goal apiece to lead the Redskins past the Highlanders in AAA Region 4 Section 2 play at Spring Valley. The No. 2 Redskins (14-0-5) will take on the Parkersburg-Parkersburg South winner in next week's regional.
  • Abby Woods netted a goal with 5:10 left in the opening half to give No. 3 Huntington (11-3-3) a 1-0 lead. Smith answered off a corner kick from Becca Logan to knot the game 1-all at halftime.

    Logan tallied the winning goal early in the second half on a rebound from Smith's shot off Highlanders keeper Taylor Hickman, who finished with three saves. Redskins goalie Callie McClanahan stopped three shots.

  • WOODROW 12, RIVERSIDE 0: Nine different players scored as Woodrow Wilson downed the Warriors in AAA Region 3 Section 2 play Thursday at the YMCA Youth Sports Complex in Beckley. Kayla Rodriguez, Moriah Njoku and Minta Bigg scored two goals each for the No. 14 Flying Eagles (10-6-4), who will take on No. 15 Greenbrier East in the title game at 3 p.m. today at the YMCA Complex. Morgan Caudill had six saves for Riverside (7-12). The game was halted with two minutes to go because of a power failure.

  • CATHOLIC 1, ST. JOE 0: Tommy Trupo scored unassisted in the fourth minute of overtime to break a scoreless tie at Schoenbaum Stadium, giving Charleston Catholic (19-1-1) a victory in the Class A Region 4 Section 2 finals.
  • A shot by Jimmy Stamms of St. Joe (9-7-6) hit the crossbar at the end of regulation and bounced out. Catholic led in shots 11-2, with St. Joe keeper Rob Blair making 10 saves and Tanner Jamison of Catholic one.

  • CALVARY 9, RAINELLE 5: A.J. Cole scored four goals to lead Calvary Baptist past Rainelle Christian in the semifinals of the Mountaineer Christian Athletic Conference soccer tournament Friday in Rainelle. Calvary will face Teays Valley Christian at 4 p.m. today in the tournament championship game. Nathan Wendel added two goals for Calvary. Andrew Davis had four goals for Rainelle.  
  • WOODROW 8, RIVERSIDE 0: Six different players scored as Woodrow Wilson defeated the Warriors in AAA Region 3 Section 2 at the YMCA Youth Sports Complex Thursday in Beckley. Jonah Moore tallied twice for the No. 5 Flying Eagles (13-3-3), who will take on Princeton at 5 p.m. today in the championship at the YMCA Complex. Adam Daugherty turned in five saves for Riverside (9-12-1).
