Bryant suspended indefinitely
Advertiser

MORGANTOWN - If West Virginia's basketball team is to indeed contend for a Big East basketball title this winter, first the Mountaineers need to get their ship in order.

That's because both of WVU's point guards now find themselves suspended indefinitely.

Sophomore-to-be Darryl "Truck'' Bryant is the latest casualty, having been suspended by coach Bob Huggins on Wednesday after a hit-and-run traffic accident that resulted in four misdemeanor charges being filed against the New York native.

"Darryl is suspended from all team-related activities,'' Huggins said in a short release issued by the school late Wednesday afternoon. He did not elaborate, but the release pointed to a "violation of team rules'' as the reason for the suspension.

Veteran Joe Mazzulla, who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, has been suspended since late April after being charged with domestic battery. That leaves Will Thomas as the only scholarship point guard on the roster and Thomas, who has played sparingly during his two seasons, would seem an unlikely candidate to be in the starting mix.

Bryant was apparently suspended because of his involvement in a traffic accident outside of Morgantown early Wednesday, after which he left the scene. He was charged with four misdemeanors, including leaving the scene of an accident. No one was injured in the accident and Bryant is free on bond.

Bryant played in every West Virginia game last season and became the starter after Mazzulla was injured in early December.

Forced into more minutes than he was probably ready for, the 6-foot-2 freshman struggled at times, but still averaged almost 10 points per game and scored 22 in a win over Marshall.

West Virginia has four incoming recruits for next season, but none are point guards.

As moose said, they can run 2 shooting guards if they have to. And in addition to Ebanks handling the ball, Butler can handle it some as well. Depending on well some of the new guys handle the ball, WVU could put a 6'4 PG, 6'8 SG, 6'10 SF, 6'9 PF and 6'10 C on the floor.

Odds are they'll have both Mazulla and Bryant back by the time ball season rolls around though.

And they do have a 4 star PG coming in the Cottrill kid from Poca so they'll be fine. They just have to grow up quick.

This might not be a bad thing. Bryant was never more than a stop gap option at best, and his repeated regressions into playing "his game", at the expense of Hugg's game became tiresome. Can anybody count the number of times Bryant drove the lane on an opponent that was a foot taller, and inevitably got rejected instead of giving up the ball? Although a freshman, his development was slow. He was and is a below average defender, with slow feet for a point guard. He is small (no way he is 6'2"). He is consistently out of position and slow to react to opponents first step. There wasn't a guard in the Big East that couldn't get past Bryant. On the positive side, he is a fundamentally sound free throw shooter, and can distribute the ball when his ego will permit. The hoops team will be fine at guard this season, with or without Bryant. WVU can run two shooting guards in the backcourt, or even utilize the smooth ball handling Ebanks as a guard.

What a shame. These kids do not know when they have it made! Yes they have to keep there nose clean, but hey they are getting a free college education and a life experience from which they should make the most.

But, if you play you gotta pay! Hugs and WVU, or any other school, has to set a hard example!!!

"West Virginia has four incoming recruits for next season, but none are point guards."

I would think after last season having to start an inexperienced point guard, the coaching staff would have gone after at least one point guard.
