WVU SPORTS: WVU women's basketball player Liz Repella and former men's player Alex Ruoff were named recipients of the Big East Conference Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognizes academic, athletic and community service work.
Repella led the team in scoring with averages of 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds and was a member of WVU's Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll. Ruoff graduated with a degree in history, averaged 15.7 points and won the Big East Men's Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year and the Big East Sportsmanship Award.
The Mountaineer football team was also recognized Tuesday as it earned a Big East Team Academic Excellence Award for the highest grade-point average of any football team in the conference. WVU's GPA for 87 players was 2.72.
The WVU wrestling team has put together the No. 24 recruiting class in the nation, according to InterMat. The Mountaineers are the only Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) program to be ranked in the Top 25. WVU placed 47th at the collegiate national tournament last season.
The Charleston WVU Fan Club will meet at Harding's Restaurant in Mink Shoals at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

MU SPORTS: Marshall baseball coach Jeff Waggoner announced the hiring of Joe Renner as the Herd's pitching coach on Tuesday. Renner has worked as a pitching coach since 1995 and has worked with 22 pitchers who made the major leagues.
Marshall swimming recruit Vera Niemeyer won the 200 backstroke in her age group recently at the German nationals. Niemeyer also finished eighth and ninth in the 100 and 50 freestyles, respectively.

ROUSH THIRD: Ty Roush of Riverside Golf Club in Mason is in third place, two strokes off the lead, after three rounds of the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational golf tournament at Pittsburgh Field Club in Fox Chapel, Pa.
Roush's three-day total is a 2-over 212 heading into today's final round of the 40-man Tri-State PGA event.
Brookville amateur Nathan Smith, who fired a 1-under 69 Tuesday, leads with an even-par 210. In second place is John Aber, who posted Tuesday's low round of 66 for a 211 total.
Berry Hills pro Barry Evans shot a 1-over 71 Tuesday and is at 216, six strokes back.
