The Green and White teams played to a 32-all tie in a scrimmage. The Herd ran a series of drills before slam-dunk and 3-point contests were capped off with the 15-minute scrimmage.
Spann is a Georgetown transfer from College Park, Ga. Chris Lutz and Darryl Merthie defeated the freshman duo of Damier Pitts and Dago Pena 30-25 in the 3-point shootout.
Marshall opens practice Friday then plays an exhibition game Nov. 1 against Wheeling Jesuit at Henderson Center. The Herd opens the regular season Nov. 16 with WVU Tech.

PREP VOLLEYBALL: The Charleston Catholic volleyball team defeated Doddridge County to win its home tournament, the Irish Invitational.
Catholic was one of six schools to place two players on the all-tournament team, joined by Doddridge County, Greater Beckley Christian, Parkersburg Catholic, Wayne and Clay County. For a complete list of the all-tournament team, see Page 2D.
Doddridge defeated Wayne to advance to the finals while Catholic advanced with a win over Greater Beckley Christian.

MU CROSS COUNTRY: Marshall's Eric Frohnapfel finished fourth at the Furman Invitational men's cross country meet Saturday.
The Morgantown native turned in a time of 26 minutes, 56 seconds and teammate Matt Shiffbauer took sixth to carry the Herd to a third-place showing in the 17-team event.
Allison Cox had a 20:10 as MU finished seventh out of 18 teams in the women's division.

WVU SOCCER: Chris Stoker knocked in a header early in the first half and Providence made it stand up for a 1-0 decision over visiting West Virginia.
WVU's Zach Johnson turned in six saves, including a kick save on a penalty kick just prior to halftime. The Mountaineers begin a three-game homestand at 8 p.m. Wednesday when they take on Ohio State in a WVPBS-televised match.

COLLEGE SWIMMING: The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams won four of five dual meets Saturday at Marshall.
The Mountaineers men's squad defeated Xavier and East Carolina while the women beat Marshall and Xavier and fell to East Carolina. Marshall's women's team defeated Xavier.

WVC SOCCER: Brett Fackenthal scored just two minutes into the game to give West Virginia Wesleyan a 1-0 victory over Pitt Johnstown in a West Virginia Conference men's soccer Friday night. George Rowley made seven saves for the shutout for the Bobcats (8-4-1, 6-1-1 WVC).

PREP FOOTBALL: David Wiley carried 20 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns Friday night to lift unbeaten Chapmanville to a 21-3 prep football victory over visiting Man.
Todd Terry added 70 yards on 12 carries for the Tigers (7-0), who came into the game ranked No. 2 in Class AA. In his first game since suffering a shoulder injury two weeks ago, Joey Stevens returned an interception 33 yards for a TD with 19 seconds left.
The only points for the Hillbillies (3-3) came on a first-quarter field goal from 36 yards by Derrick Earnest.
