  •   On the opinion page July 8, the Gazette blamed the gun lobby that the justice system never really cracks down on gun crime. Tell the truth, Gazette. The gun lobby advocates prosecution for gun crime. It was the gun lobby that pushed one gun plus one crime equals five years to life.

  •   I was really upset and angry when I read the article about Habitat for Humanity having to send part of their donations overseas. I thought that was Americans helping Americans and now we have to send part of that away.
  •   Remember when the front page of the sports section used to actually have sports stories rather than just legal proceedings and criminal matters involving sports figures?
  •   I would like to thank the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department and the magistrate court through a difficult time of domestic violence myself. They have been very helpful in making me feel comfortable, but it was also up to me to stay away from the abuser. They did their part and it is up to the women to do their part by staying away.
  •   Could someone tell me where I can get some hard apple cider in the Charleston area?
  •   I would like to know how many more people are going to lose their lives at Cotton Hill on Route 16 if the state does not fix that road. There is a wreck there every other day. Please help us.
  •   Attention seniors born between 1917 and 1926. It is time to let your voice be heard. Chances are good to pass HR 368 in the House of Representatives. Could mean money for you. Contact your member of Congress or the president to help make it happen.
  •   Now that we have gambling at the racetracks, why don't we dispose of the dogs at the racetracks? They do nothing but pad the pockets of some legislators and their families.
  •   I heard West Virginia University is going to keep Mike Garrison so he can make sure all the football team stays academically eligible to play.
  •   I am a non-smoker but I believe the smoking ban is surely illegal when a few bureaucrats dictate what 300,000 people can or cannot do. Is this democracy? Put it on the ballot.
  •   It appears to be that someone from the Park Commission or County Commission should be checking the regulations on the park trails, the width of them, for emergency purposes and firefighting equipment.
  •   Why doesn't the DOH clean off the lot behind the retaining pond on Big Tyler Road in Cross Lanes? It would make the area look so much nicer.
  •   After reading the criminal record of Clark, I find it a shame that our judicial system can let someone like this walk the streets. What does this say about us? The system needs to be overhauled. It is now just for the criminal.

I would like to thank the Kanawha County Board of Health for their smoking ban for many reasons. First of all, I may not have a job very much longer because our business has fallen off so much so I will be getting lots of rest. I'll be losing weight (solving another health problem, obesity) because I won't be able to afford food. My carbon imprint on the world will be much smaller once my electricity, gas and wter are turned off. I won't be using any fuel, but then I won't need to as I will have no job, no money, and can't afford to shop. But at least I won't be subjected to second hand smoke.
I also want to know where all you non-smokers are? You sure aren't flooding my establishment.

Personally, I think it would be a good thing for the bars to close. There would be so many less accidents and death caused by the drinkers. They think they are "fine" to drive home, but they're not. Too many precious people have died due to the drunkeness of others, who usually aren't even hurt in wrecks. As to the smoking ban in bars, I completely disagree w/ that. Fact is, people do go to bars to drink, and alot of the people do smoke. That's why they go to them. I am 100% NON-smoker, but I do believe smoking should be allowed in bars. Next thing, the gov. wil ltry to tell people not to smoke in their cars, then it'll be their homes.

So what happened to all the non-smokers who were supposed to come flooding into the bars and video lottery parlors, laughing and cheering, to make up for the loss of business? We were told that since most people were non-smokers, the bars would actually do BETTER business. But it ain't happening! Bars are closing in Ohio after they passed the smoking ban, and it's only a matter of time before bars start closing here in Kanawha County. The fact is, people don't go to bars to be HEALTHY. They go to bars to relax, have fun, and tie one on if necessary. You want to go someplace to be healthy, you go to a gym. You want to go someplace to nourish yourself, you go to a restaurant. But at bars, the smokers smoke, and the non-smokers don't mind. At bars, you get to enjoy two legal adult products, booze and tobacco, TOGETHER. The bars in Putnam County fought the smoking ban AND WON. Bars in Kanawha County should be able to fight the smoking ban as well.

If government dont tell people what to do with their own bodies then why do I have to wear a seat belt in my own vehicle and wear a helmet when riding my own motorcycle.
