Like Obama, perhaps, West Virginia gives babies no human rights
Jeremiah G. Dys

No one should be allowed to decide whether one innocent life is worth more than another. Not someone as poor as a college student or as powerful as a United States senator.

Jill Stanek, a nurse-turned-blogger, can describe this in real terms. She should know. If you go to her Web site, you can hear her tell of how she held a discarded Down Syndrome baby for 45 minutes as the child lay dying in her arms, the baby's undeveloped lungs finally succumbing to an intended demise.

But this is as personal for you as it is for Ms. Stanek, because West Virginia law permits this passive infanticide.

In other words, it is perfectly legal for a doctor in West Virginia, upon failing to abort a pre-born child, to allow birth and then choose not to render aid. Not oxygen. Not CPR. Indeed, not even a blanket for warmth.

This is what Margaret Chapman and WV Free might call, "reproductive rights."

During the recent forum hosted by Pastor Rick Warren at his California church, Warren asked each of the candidates for president a rather straightforward question: "At what point is a baby entitled to human rights?"

Sen. McCain promptly answered, "At the moment of conception." Sen. Obama's answer took a little longer: "I think that whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade."

While serving in the Illinois state Senate, Sen. Obama voted against legislation that would protect babies who survived botched abortions, even though an identical piece of legislation in the U.S. Senate passed unanimously - unopposed even by NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Sen. Obama never did answer when a baby receives human rights. Perhaps, in his mind, they never do. But, according to his political platform, he is in favor of extending human rights based upon one's actual or pretend sexual orientation. In other words, he would extend human rights protections to a man feigning the role of a woman but apparently would not extend the same courtesy to an innocent child no bigger than your hand - and neither would the law of West Virginia.

Thankfully, in this democratic republic, you and I are above every elected official's pay grade and, with our vote, can downgrade their pay, if we so choose. Remind your federal and state leaders that you support human rights by opposing passive infanticide.

Deciding which innocent life is of more value is not as difficult as Sen. Obama might suggest. You see, every innocent life is priceless. But, a person's potential for human rights only matters if he or she is given an opportunity to reach it. If our leaders will not recognize human rights for children in the womb, there's no reason to trust them to do so when children are outside of it.

Mr. Dys distorts the truth to lead you to believe that Sen. Obama is pro-strangling babies.

What this character Dys (rhymes with LIES) doesn't tell you is that the bills Sen. Obama voted against in Illinois were crafted to undermine Roe v Wade and pre-existing Illinois state law which ALREADY regulates reproductive health care and medical practice.

So it was a right wing TRAP. Because the FACT is that existing Illinois law already requires doctors to provide medical care in the very rare case that babies are born alive during abortions. Dys didn't tell you that that these bills were also opposed by pro-choice Republicans and the Illinois Medical Society-a leading association of doctors in the state!

Sen McCain voted against expanding SCHIP to children, arguing on the Senate floor that it covered too many uninsured children. In 1995 and 1997, McCain also voted repeatedly against health care for low-income children, and in 1995 voted to eliminate vaccines from children's health care.

To think realistically: NorPlant has been around for over three decades. It was discontinued because they said it infringed on young peoples rights to reproduce and it could cause cancer in the girls reproductive system and the boys testicles. I do not have to be a woman to understand your frustration with all the false information the government and the news media floods us with everyday. There is nothing that can stop young and old people from having sex, that is a given and it is as natural as the Sun coming up in the sky every morning and it has nothing to do with politics or religion, but if a young girl cannot get pregnant or a young boy cannot get her pregnant then that eliminates all those bad qualities of life that you mentioned. I will create high paying jobs for W.Va, the best educational system in America, the best Health Care in America and that will take care of your other concerns. I know you have heard these lies before, but I will never lie to you.

Lastly, I'm not a feminist but I SERIOUSLY don't think a man (ANY man) who isn't the father of the child has a right to say ANYTHING about abortion. YOU don't get pregnant. YOU don't face eclampsia. YOU don't face uterine prolapse. YOU don't face toximia. YOU don't face miscarriage. YOU don't face uterine or cervical cancer. YOU don't face episiotomy. YOU don't face any problems AT ALL related to pregnancy. YOU don't retain dangerous amounts of water and sodium, suffer the stretching of your torso muscles, have your internal organs rearranged, have extreme headaches, heartburn, and mood swings. YOUR feet don't swell two sizes and make it impossible to stand comfortably. YOU don't have to pee every 30 minutes for six + months. YOU don't have the torment of constant worry. Nothing YOU do can endanger the baby. If it's born ill, noone blames YOU. If it lives or dies, it has no physical effect on YOU. YOU can walk away any time. YOU can deny the baby. When YOU get pregnant, let's talk.

As much as I am both liberal and Democrat, I believe there are certain conservative issues that carry merit. Bring back the death penalty, and make it also cover child molestors. Find a responsible way to minimize the effect of welfare, without endangering those who really can't live without it. I wish there were a limit on the number of children that ANY person (not just the poor!) can have--two should be ideal. After that, immediate sterilization unless there is exclusionary documentation (ie, religious affiliation). Provide incentives for adopting children who are being lost in the system--the older or more ill the child, the higher the incentive. Make it a good thing to adopt instead of breeding. Now for the liberal--Legalize abortion for one very good reason--a woman will have one no matter what. Legal ones are safer and cleaner, better regulated, and (hey politician) taxable! Nationalize health care or health care access. END THE WAR and don't start another one. Should be easy.
