MOUNT NEBO, W.Va. - A Florida man was arrested in Nicholas County after allegedly assaulting a woman and wounding a Nicholas County sheriff's deputy during a high-speed police chase.

Nicholas County deputies responded to a domestic dispute in the county on Monday morning to find Bryan Brooks, 34, of Florida, had allegedly assaulted Shawna McBride, of Summersville, with a weapon.

Police responded to the call, and found Brooks fleeing the area in a stolen 2001 four-door Saturn.

Police chased the suspect into Summersville, where Summersville Police and State Police joined the high-speed chase.

Brooks turned south on U.S. 19 toward Mount Nebo, and was seen traveling southbound in the northbound lane, according to police.

The suspect turned onto Old Route 19 at Mount Nebo and rammed into the rear end of a sheriff's cruiser, ending the chase.

Brooks attempted to fight the officers once the chase ended, and had to be physically restrained. Brooks injured Deputy Jarod Bennett, 23, during the altercation, police said.

Brooks was taken to the Central Regional Jail and charged with malicious assault on a police officer, unlawful assault and grand larceny.
