Ind. trucker faces DUI charge in Saturday accident on I-64
WINFIELD, W.Va. -- The driver of a tractor-trailer involved in a Saturday accident that killed one young man and sent three other teenagers to the hospital has been charged with driving under the influence.
Breazeale W. Norris, 57, of Indianapolis, was charged Monday with four counts of DUI causing injury and a DUI involving a commercial vehicle.
Those charges were amended Tuesday to include one count of DUI causing death and one count of leaving the scene of an accident causing death. The additional charges were filed after James Roberts, 18, of Eleanor, died Tuesday morning, a Putnam County sheriff's deputy said.
Norris rear-ended a car just after 10 p.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64 near the Teays Valley exit, according the criminal complaint filed in Putnam County Magistrate Court.
Norris was arrested at the scene after a Hurricane police officer smelled alcohol on his breath, according to the complaint.
Norris recorded a 0.079 when given a Breathalyzer at the scene, and told the officer he had taken NyQuil for a cold, the complaint states. Although 0.08 is the usual blood-alcohol limit to be cited for DUI, the legal limit is 0.04 for commercial vehicles.
in addition to Eleanor, Brian Bess, 18, of Red House; and two unidentified juveniles were in the car that was rear-ended. All were sent to the hospital.
Norris was being held Tuesday at Western Regional Jail.
