CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The pumpkins are going fast in Putnam County.
Of the county's two farms that offer customers the chance to pick their own pumpkin, one has completely sold out and the other is running on a limited supply.
Bob Gritt of Gritt's Farm in Midway still has about an acre of pumpkins left for customers to scour for that perfect fall accessory, and thinks his supply should last until close to Halloween.
"We still got pumpkins, and we still got a lot of rotten ones," Gritt said late this week. He lost a good portion of his pumpkins to mold because of the wet weather.
The wet summer and a high demand for pumpkins cleaned out Jim and Vallery Withrow. The couple operates a 6-acre farm on McCloud Road and sold out of pumpkins early this month.
Vallery Withrow said they lost a portion of their pumpkins to rot because of the constant rain, and deer have also been a problem this season. She said an influx of customers toward the end of September cleaned out what pumpkins they had left.
"The pumpkins ripened sooner than they should have, and we sold out of what we had in about two weeks," Vallery Withrow said. "Once we open, they don't last long."
The Withrows began selling pumpkins about three years ago. It was such a success, they devoted an extra acre to the pumpkin patch this year.
Gritt's has been offering pick-your-own pumpkins for about six years. "It's been a popular place for kids and their families; especially on the weekends, we can get busy," Bob Gritt said.
This year, rain and cold weather has kept some families home, he said.
"It's been good and bad, a little of both. We had some good weekends and three bad ones," he said. "It's been cold and wet; people just haven't gotten out."
Pumpkins are also available for purchase at Putnam County Farmers Market in Hurricane. The market is open from 3:30 to 7 p.m. every Thursday at Valley Park. Gritt's Farm is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
