CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing a man on the city's West Side earlier this month.
Brandon George "Young Gunna" Sherrod, 19, of Charleston was charged with murder in connection with the death of James Michael "Baby Goon" Williams, said Sgt. Steve Cooper of the Charleston Police Department.
Williams, 19, was killed by a single bullet to the chest after a fusillade of gunfire came through the kitchen window of his Grant Street home at about 8:30 p.m. Nov. 3.
Williams had been in Kanawha Magistrate Court earlier that day to answer to child neglect charges for allegedly allowing his cousin's 11-month-old child to have a baby bottle full of beer.
"We've been working on this investigation for the last month, basically day and night," Cooper said at a news conference Monday.
According to a criminal complaint in Kanawha Magistrate Court, two female witnesses said they picked up Sherrod and another man, known only as "White Mike," from the Bronx in New York City and drove them to the area near Williams' home shortly before the shooting.
While the women stayed in the car nearby, the complaint said, Sherrod and the other man went to the apartment to assault Williams "in retaliation relating to an ongoing dispute." Cooper could not say what the dispute was.
According to the criminal complaint, the two men came back to the car a short time later. Sherrod allegedly told the women, "I dropped him with my first shot," according to the complaint.
Cooper said shell casings from two guns were found at the scene, indicating that both men had fired at Williams. He said police believe they know who "White Mike" is, and expect additional arrests.
Cooper asked that the witnesses in the case not be identified because police fear for their safety.
Sherrod has a criminal history that includes a charge of domestic battery and a felony charge of possession of drugs with intent to deliver. He was being held without bond Monday at the South Central Regional Jail.
Cooper said the investigation is continuing.
