Human remains found in Harpers Ferry

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. -- The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says hunters found human skeletal remains along the Shenandoah River in Harpers Ferry.

The Herald-Mail reported that hunters made the discovery on Thanksgiving. Sheriff Peter Dougherty believes the remains had been there at least a year.

The remains are being examined at the West Virginia Medical Examiner's Office.

Dougherty said he expects it will be a week to 10 days before he receives information from the Medical Examiner's Office regarding the person's gender or age.

He said a forensic team will also investigate the area where the remains were found.

Dougherty said investigators do not have any leads on the identity of the remains.
