Christmas train

PETERSBURG, W.Va. -- The Snowflake Express leaves the South Side Depot at 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m. Dec. 13 and 14 for a train ride with Santa to the Festival of Lights at Welton Park. Hot cocoa and cookies will be served and Christmas carols sung on the ride.

Tickets cost $10 for children 2 to 12 years of age, $12 for adults (12 years and older).

Children also may join Santa for a continental breakfast at 9 a.m. Dec. 14 and a train ride through the Grant County countryside, listening to a reading of "Holiday Magic on the Farm," written by West Virginia authors Marla Pisciotta, Jim King and Don Kesner. All children will receive a special gift from Santa.

Tickets cost $20. There's no charge for children age 2 and younger.

Opera House play

MARLINTON, W.Va. -- The Greenbrier Valley Theatre will present "It's A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play" at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Pocahontas County Opera House.

Tickets cost $8; free for children 17 and younger.

The performance will benefit the Pocahontas County Family Resource Network's Christmas Project 2013. Each Christmas, Family Resource Network typically serves about 250 children from low-income families, working with the Pocahontas County Sheriff's Department, local churches and business to collect and distribute toys and winter clothing, as well as food. Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted at the Opera House at the door for the Dec. 8 performance.

Winterplace opens

GHENT, W.Va. -- Winterplace Ski Resort opened Nov. 29 with operating hours through Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and with at least five trails and three lifts for skiing and riding.

Winterplace will close again Dec. 2-5 before opening again on Dec. 6.

Winterplace President Terry Pfeiffer said Nov. 29 is the earliest the ski resort had ever opened.

When fully operational, Winterplace offers nine lifts, 27 trails, two terrain parks and the state's largest snow tubing park, with two Super Carpet lifts.
