Manchin attending kickoff of charity deer hunt

ROANOKE, W.Va. -- U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin will participate in the traditional sighting of the rifles at an annual event that's raised $300,000 since 2007 for Hunters Helping the Hungry.

The rifle-sighting and reception are set for late today at Stonewall Resort in Lewis County.

The West Virginia Governor's One Shot Whitetail Hunt gets underway Saturday and supports the venison-donation program administered by the Mountaineer Food Bank in Gassaway.

The state Division of Natural Resources sponsors the hunt. Spokesman Hoy Murphy says the hunt occurs on private land with individual guides, and only antlerless deer will be taken.
