State agriculture department names director

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A division of the state Department of Agriculture that deals with plant pests and diseases is getting a new director.

Agriculture Commissioner Walt Helmick says Eric Ewing will become plant industries director on Nov. 1. He currently serves as assistant director.

Ewing is a resident of Pax in Fayette County and started with the department in 1995. He'll replace the retiring Sherri Hutchinson.

The plant industries division protects the state's agricultural interests and forests from destructive insects, plant diseases, noxious weeds and other pest organisms through detection, regulatory and control programs.
