Police raid sandwich shop, find guns, drugs, alcohol

Charleston police raided a West Side sandwich shop early Sunday morning, finding guns, drugs and alcohol in what they described as an after hours bar.

It was the second such incident in five weeks at Miss Sylvia's Sandwich Shop, at 2401 West Washington St.

At around 5 a.m. a Charleston Police SWAT team raided Miss Sylvia's, according to Chief of Detectives Steve Cooper. There were about 50 people there, as well as a large amount of liquor, several hand guns and scattered amounts of marijuana, Cooper said.

The shop does not have a liquor license.

Four people were arrested and two officers sustained minor injuries.

Officers, who had obtained a search warrant, had to break a window to let themselves in after people inside refused to open the door.

There were about 20 officers with the SWAT team as well as numerous others from other units.

Cooper described the crowd as "fairly belligerent."

"Guns were ditched as we entered," Cooper said. "We suspect the guns may be stolen and we're investigating this as a continuing criminal enterprise."

The owners of Miss Sylvia's; Rodney Armstrong, 43, and Emma Laughlin, 36, both of Charleston; are charged with manufacture or sale of alcohol without a state license, a misdemeanor.

Armstrong and Laughlin were arrested and charged with the same offense on July 7, after a Michigan man was shot outside of Miss Sylvia's and police found that it was operating as an after hours bar.

Two others, Anwar Keaton, 33, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and John Robinson, 26, of Cleveland, Ohio, were arrested and charged with obstructing an officer. Cooper said that they were not obeying lawful orders, had to be physically placed under arrest and became violent during the fingerprinting process.

Armstrong and Laughlin are both being held at South Central Regional Jail on $7,500 bail.

The listed phone number for Miss Sylvia's has been disconnected and the shop's Facebook page has been taken down.
